Cryo2 intake cooling install - pics

Well trying a couple new things... my neighbor had this DEI cry02 kit that he wasn't using so he sold it to me for a great price so figured what the heck, lets see what it can do. I plan on running a 50 nitrous shot down the road, and this gives me everything I need in place minus the nozzles and jets and that is an easy swap. I can just replace that little 4" piece of pipe with one that has the nos nozzle bung welded in there - shouldn't take more than 15 minutes.

Anyhow, this is interesting if nothing else. The bottle is currently filled with co2 (will run nitrous when purging to an IC sprayer because if any co2 gets in the intake it will rob horsepower). The arming switch sends power to the system enabling the pushbutton to activate the solenoid and release the co2. The green light just tells me the system is armed. When the solenoid releases the co2, it rushes through that piece of piping that is now inline with the OVCP. Inside the pipe is an aerodynamically shaped 'bulb' - kind of looks like a large water droplet on its side. The co2 super cools that and vents out that side cap which will be replaced with a line down to the intercooler and a rectangular IC sprayer. Then, it will cool the bulb and purge onto the intercooler to give a little extra cooling.

So anyhow, its not super sophisticated by any means, but the price was right and I was looking for a something new to try and this was it. I'll head down to the track soon, datalog some runs with and without cooling and see if it actually yields results.

Here are some pics of the install:

Arming switch, activation switch, and green 'dummy' light. New wideband mounted above the radio... finally!

Well I went to the track last night and was trying to datalog and just dial in the tune with the wideband and megatune.... well, wouldn't you know it that once I had the initial datarun and found out I was running too rich under boost and make some adjustments - the laptop decides to crap out when the datalog begins! Grrrrrr!

So by the time I did a run while spraying the co2, the laptop was not logging and I couldn't tell what the mani air temps were. Figures.... But nonetheless, I really couldn't tell if it helped performance because the car is just not even close to dialed in yet with the wideband.

I am going to head down to a little hidden road maybe tonight or tomorrow and try to get this stupid laptop to function properly this time and see what I can log.

  • 2 weeks later...
probly the best way to set that up would be to run a connection from the intake chiller to a fuel chill bar then to an I/C sprayer. this would cancel the need for a purge set up. then add a 50-100hp N2O setup in addition to the CO2 system.

the air in the intercooler plumbing travels at a few hundred miles an hour. going through a 2" section will take a micro second and in a microsecond it will not cool down one bit even if that section was as fronzen as the dude in terminator 2

put it on the intercooler

Yep, the whole thing was pretty pointless... I migrated what I could over and am running a small n2o shot now instead. I still left that 'bulb' in place and I have the purge go through that before it vents out in front of the windshield, but on the dyno, I only had a drop of a couple degrees on the mani air temps - so it's not worth the effort. It was a failed experiment. :)
