I can't figure out why, but if I unplug my stock stereo, my engine dies and will not start. Hooking up another deck with harness adapter doesn't work either. Can anyone help with this gremlin?

Thats the most F'd up thing I've ever heard.

I assume you are talking about a Starquest, and I can think of no reason for that to happen.

Only vehicles I know of that will have that problem is some of the newer GMs. They have the stereo integrated into the alarm and computer and cruise control I think.

I did an aftermarket CD player in my buddys Trailblazer and we had to buy a special harness that relocated the factory player to under the drivers seat then ran back to the dash and hooked up to the aftermarket player. All that cause the factory system was part of the cars computer.

As far as a SQ, I'd have to say its a BIG ground problem?

Yes, go thru every ground point in your car.  You can download a service manual here for a list of ground points.

You will want to take care of any ground problems.   In many cases where people have neglected to check their grounds, the electrical system will attempt to ground thru the accelerator/throttle/gas pedal cable.   This will cause your accelerator pedal to stick and eventually the cable will weld itself -- permanantly unable to move.

Yup, had the cable in my 86 tsi, it sucks, sucks more when it happens twice before you figure it out. This kid in my town with an 87 tsi I help out had the same thing happen.

Doh!! This oughta be fun ;D  The car is an 87 and I can't find correct manual. Should I use the 86 or 88 manual to trace the grounds?  Thanks

I believe that the radio wiring in the 1987 models is like the 1988/89 models, so I would use the 1988 Conquest Service Manual.

The ground  points are the same -- all model years.  Only the way the radio is wired, changed in 1987.

All model years, the factory radio ground thru the radio case and the mounting brackets.    Still, your car is searching for ground.  Start with ground connections around the battery first.
