My oil separator is missing and after a few minutes of idling it starts to blow blue smoke a little, more likely PVC issue or valve seals? I may take the head off any way just for peace of mind.

Have you done a compression test? Also how is your turbo's shaft tightness?

I still have to do a compression test and I just bought another turbo that's supposed to be good to replace my cracked turbo..

I feel a little better, I did a compression check and all four cylinders were at 135. The PO said he had rebuilt the engine. I also performed a leak down test and had to hold the crank with one hand while pressurizing the cylinder even to 10 PSI, I couldn't really get any audible leaks out of any of the cylinders.

When I install the turbo I might just install the new Schneider springs and replace the valve seals while I'm at it. I ordered the gaskets and seals from "Dad's"

I reallllllly had to fight the urge to get a bigger turbo but it would have been wrong and a waste of money since I have a million things to do and learn before I put a bigger turbo on it.

Found a crack on the hot side, I think i have another one in my pile of parts. That answers why I only get 7 lbs boost, I'm surprised I get any at all.

Thought about it and it makes no sense for me not to have full boost with a crack on the hot side.

Took the old turbo off to replace it with a good unit I bought from Calquest and found much more!

The exhaust manifold has a small crack in it and it doesn't appear to be leaking yet but when I took it off the head I could see how poorly it mated to the head itself. I have a good manifold and will have it relief cut and flattened. None of the studs broke off but the head is relatively new.

I need a new accordion hose and will replace it with an aluminum piece and two couplers.

I will be replacing all the nuts and washers as they seem to be sub par. I bought a genuine exhaust manifold gasket from Engine Machine and what a huge difference in quality with the crappy Fel-pro that was on there, I usually like Fel-pro stuff.

The old turbo is toast: As you can see the fins are junk and I can feel a good amount of play on the shaft, which I think could be causing the blue smoke? Hopefully.

This one is better: No shaft play at all.

Started putting it back together when I decided I might as well re-torque the head and install the Schneider valve springs I bought. Glad I did because I found this:

The PO installed a mechanical set up and it all looks new but don't think he adjusted them correctly is my guess. The rockers are shot and many of the lobes look like they were ground down.

One of the spare heads I got with the car has a complete valvetrain so I need to get it out and make sure it's good to use.

I will be using this thread to see what I have... http://starquest.i-x...der=asc&start=0

After looking through the i-x site I think I really need to pull the head to see if it's a Hydraulic or Mechanical head. If I had sold this car to someone and they ran into all these problems I would have really felt bad.

http://starquest.i-x...c&start=25 The the marks on these cams are indistinguishable. One has a "zero" that might be a 6 and the other cam looks like the end with the stamp has been ground down, it's not flat like the other one.

Looks like I need to buy a cam.

How did replacing my turbo turn into this? Head looks to be hydraulic so I'm happy.

With all this off the engine I'm tempted to replace the steering box and steering coupler while I can get to it.

if you get the head surfaced be sure to measure this before you have it machined.

then be sure to grind it down back to the specs you measured before you machined it.

I would normally send the head out but this head has very few miles since installed and I really don't want to pull off the front cover to have them machined together, but maybe I will $$ . That looks like a great mod, maybe I'll have to buy some bits and try it.

I know exactly what its like when you start looking into fixing a few things and then it cascades into other parts of the car. I had the same thing happen when I upgraded to my JDL manifold and lower shores intake. I figure well heck, while I'm here... My build thread shows what happened after that lol.

So, it's a disease?

I guess that depends on your view of it. I look at it as a bunch more stuff to add to my To-Do list. I enjoy it. You or others might wish it would stop lol.

I enjoy fixing it, that's why I bought it. I'm just impatient and need to enjoy it more. It's all stuff I would replace eventually anyway so it's all good really. I just want to drive it...

after years of owning quests i got this 89 in hopes to just drive it and make it one summer no real issues and lots of driving.

WELL after 2 engines and 3 turbos and a year later i would say this year was a success compared to last year.

i finally made it a summer of driving and enjoying the car.

you guys amaze me with your skill and persistence on working and making these cars better.

So, I've come to my senses and will probably send out the head to be cleaned and checked, and remove timing chain case to inspect the chains. If I have found this many issues thus far then I need to inspect the chains as a precaution. And I could get rid of all that blue paint.

I plan on removing the EGR system and following the suggestion on th 1-x site and use freeze plugs to plug the EGR holes. Anyone see issues with this?

On the head, why not just save up a little more money and have bigger valves installed at this point with ARP head studs? I will more than likely replace all the chains and guides with new ones from Randy (Engine Machine Service) Things I wanted to do eventually anyway.

I need to keep in mind this is a long term project....Do it right do it once.

Amen brother. As far as the valves go I'd first ask what your goal for the car is. If your looking for more a budget build with around 300hp you could see more gains by spending that money in other places. If eventually you want to go full snot on it, then hell go for it. The arp head studs are something I'd always recommend.

Today I ordered SS valves, chains, ARP studs and gaskets from DAD and the remaining rubber hoses from RA. I'm going to try and reseal the steering box and replace the coupler this weekend and then on to the chains and head. It will take me a few months but it should be getting along fairly well. To have it running well will be huge for my morale.
