1984 CONQUEST WILL NOT START AGAIN....

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, i think i am in the right forum, if not sorry. ok here is my story, i have 1984 conquest that was given to me by a friend 3-4 years ago, he knew i was always looking for one, so since it had starting issues he gave it to me to see if i can maybe fix it. the wierd part is it sat around for a year and one day i went out and started it with a borrowed battery, and it started right up, i was excited and did not really have the posible old bad fuel in mind, i decided to take it to gas station and add new gas since it was almost empty and hesitating really bad probably due to bad fuel. so luckily i returned home and it all of a sudden died when i was backing into my garage. since that day that it died, it will not start again whatsoever. so i disconnected fuel line going to injectors just to see if fuel was coming from pump and it was. then a week later i dropped tank and replaced whole fuel system, pump, filter, etc.because i thought the bad gas may be the issue, it still will not start, it cranks but will not turn over, it just kills battery. i really love this vehicle and i want to keep it out of the crusher, i have mechanical knowledge but these cars are a mystery to me. can anyone please point me in the right direction? i just hope its not a timing issue. sensors? electrical? distributer? i am puzzled...THANK YOU!

Check the ECI fuse link next to the battery. Clean all the connections on the coil and the ground for the plastic box next to it. Injectors clips corrode and is a super common no start issue. Replace them with a bosch EV1 style and clean the injector terminals.

Thank you for your responses guys, ok i went to look at ECI fuse link, the connections were kind of corroded, so i scraped them off. injector terminals looked clean and shiny. still no start. but i will replace with bosch you recomended..um 87redcat, when you say ignighter box, are you refering to distributer or ignition coil? sorry i am not to familiar with early 80's cars. i have removed ignition coil and will test it today, it is Diamond branded and looks original, so maybe i will have luck and it may be issue. i will update soon. thank you guys again for your time. thank god for STARQUESTCLUB.COM!!! if i cannot not figure this issue soon, i really cannot afford expensive parts right now, and instead of it rotting in garage i will sell for low price, it needs to be on the road where it belongs,i am in colorado springs, she is in great shape, a little rust on fenders and small dent on drivers side, paint job is burned but used to be atlantic blue but faded now, 110,000k odometer. all parts intact. new tires and aftermarket wheels but i have the original wheels (one missing). ill try to fix first. i love her!

i looked up some of the issues with this box in forums. and yes this may be the issue. but WOW! even on EBAY $260! is there a cheaper route lol? my local junkyard never has conquests in. but i was wondering if any other mitsubishi's use this type of ignition control box? from what ive read, this is probably the issue, but wanna make sure before i go spending big bucks. someone said that if tachometer does not jump while cranking, it is a bad box. is this true? thank you again.

If the tach doesn't jump when cranking then you don't have spark. Without that RPM signal from the ignition the ECU wont turn on the injectors. Distributor feeds a signal to the ignitor, black plastic box next to the coil. Then the ignitor amplifies the signal and sends it to the coil. The ignitor has a ground screw next to it. Clean that ground. With the key on check for battery + on the red wire in the middle of the ignitor connector. If you have a good ground and battery + then the ignitor is probably bad. If no battery + then ECI fuse link or ECI relay is bad. The plastic ignitor is known to die without warning.

Plenty of people here have spare ignitors. Put a post in the items wanted section.
