carguygibby
I was just given a 1996 Volvo 850 2.4l (bummer it's not a turbo) station wagon a few weeks ago. It was about to go off to the crusher as it was overheating and had dropped a ball joint which also wrecked the driver's side CV axle. I had the car towed to my house where I put on a new water pump along with hoses and a thermostat. I found out the timing belt had been replaced recently but whoever did the job didn't do the pump. Really?http://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/confused.gifI then replaced both ball joints and the CV axle. I will be replacing the other CV axle next weekend as the boots are torn on that side. I also bought 2 new tires, replaced the tailgate struts and repaired the panel, fixed the dome light along with a couple of other little interior things then did a major tune-up and a thorough clean up (car was filthy).I now have an awesome old station wagon which drives great and doesn't look too shabby either!http://volvoforums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif I've always had a soft spot for these old beasts and I am very happy to say I now own one. it will make a great daily driver and parts chaser for the Conquest.Colin http://i663.photobucket.com/albums/uu353/carguygibby/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-09/20140910_164540_zpsasphzf03.jpg

The Swedes Norwegians love to drift these monstrous beasts if you can believe it.It's still kinda nasty under the hood but I will clean it up soon. Not a bad engine to work on, everything pretty accessible for a FWD car.Colin

carguygibby
Oh this is a front wheel version? Those came RWD too right?I didn't even know these were FWD either until I got it. They did make a very similar wagon which was called a V90 which is RWD. carguygibby
Sweet looking car for a beater and free. There was still a good car underneath, just needed some TLC. Last job to get it up to my standards is to fix the weird PCV system which is badly clogged. Most cars an easy job but on these 5 cylinder bricks a real PITA!Colin
