tsuprat
I haven't found a applicable post for this question. The service blowup shows the in tank fuel filter. I have cleared access to the top of the tank and there is also a canister there. Car has been sitting for years and will need the filter(s) replaced. Any thoughts? Thanks Edited August 19, 2014 by tsuprat
randy
There's one in the tank, one conical cone filter in the fuel line at the fuel pumpand then there's one in the engine bay.
ucw458
Strainer in the tank pickup. Cone shaped strainer on the pump inlet(throw it away). Filter on the drivers side frame rail under the TB. Screens in the fuel rail above the injectors to keep large chunks out of them.
tsuprat
wow . Great guys thanks. Any thoughts about the metal canister in line right next to the tank access. Looks to be factory but doesn't show up on blow up.Know of any 89's coming through with a fuel filter there?
ucw458
Someone must have added that because it's not stock.
tsuprat
When I get back into it I'll determine what line it's in and compare to the service manual. Thanks a lot. I appreciate the help

tsuprat
Can't tell from the blow up but based on the fuel tank picture from aknorthstar I'd say the canister shown must be the fuel pump. I've only had the view through the access panel and based on the blow up assumed the fuel pump wasn't visible through the access. Thanks again. tsuprat
Thanks BuGG, great links. Pictures and manual blowup had me questioning what filters may be on the car. I'm thankful for all the responses. I'm gathering information as I get this car running Edited August 19, 2014 by tsuprat
hunter85
If your doing a pump Walbro 255lph and get rid of cone make a in line filter from sender to fuel pump. You do need a filter before the pump or gunk gets in there and burns them up.
DRFTQUEST
That metal thing you are referring to might be your fuel pump. If you just opened the service access at a glance it looks like a "filter"drop the tank and you will see its the Fuel Pump
DRFTQUEST
IMO you dont need an inline filter "before the pump" it restricts fuel flow.just my .02 cents
ucw458
If your doing a pump Walbro 255lph and get rid of cone make a in line filter from sender to fuel pump. You do need a filter before the pump or gunk gets in there and burns them up. A filter before the pump is not good. The in tank strainer is all you need. Filters before the pump cause cavitation. Cavitation kills fuel pumps. If you have gunk and rust in your tank then drop the tank and clean it.
