Project Blizz 88 quest

Hi guys I picked up a 88 Quest that a fellow member listed on ebay alerts recently. Pictures in the ad hardly showed anything of the car and it did not have a motor, but the guy posted no rust with fresh paint for 600 bucks, so i emailed him. He told me the car was still apart from being painted and he had planned but never got around to engine swapping it. Now as some of you may know i have a 88 shp auto car that has some rust issues a donor like this would be a perfect candidate for me especially since it has black interior instead of my red interior. Sorry I was never a fan of the red interior. So yesterday I took the 3 1/2 hour trip to Minneapolis area to pick this car up and what did i find. I first glance I spied a very clean body with a brand spanking new front air dam. I did a once over no rust on body interior was decient body was straight none of the plastic was broken 108k on the chassis and rims? SHP? after I seen that I looked underneath and sure enough SHP shocks to go with it. So onto the door but since the doorjams were painted(was originally a red quest) The tire label was painted over. Then on top of that it is a sunroof car. Tires OK. Everything is a check. Also still has the conquest floor mats. Paint is ok but not the best in the world but not bad either. He also sent in a uncracked 2nd set of tail lights and a brand new car cover. All for 600 bucks. Hard to beleive the guy was considering scrapping this car if no one picked this up. I guess its my lucky day. Twice now I went to go get a quest and both times I ended up with a SHP somehow. Lucky times i guess. So here is what I am working with.

So for my plans

For the time being my 88 SHP auto car that is rusted out is now my parts car. I have the motor out. It is getting new seals timing chain crank balance eliminated, going back to stock head but eliminating jet valves and sticking with my arp head studs. I have it currently tore down to the short block cleaning everything up nice before putting it in sure a nice looking engine bay. I plan on putting it all back together for the time being to tool around and have a little fun. I have another motor that had been previously built in the past that I plan on building on the side as I have the funds too. I already have a non jetvalve head that had been machined already with bigger valves. I want get a little nuts with it just to see how far I can get with it. It has hyper pistions. I like to update that motor to forged, put a big cam on in run a hx35 turbo setup MPI it and everything to go with it. I probably won't start on that leg of the project until winter though. For now my rough goal is to have this car back running good and on the road by august. I am debating on selling some parts off my parts SHP quest to fund this project. Things like the SHP rims I am not going to use on this quest. Yes I have 2 sets of SHPs. But for now that is all I have I will keep you guys posted.

Well so far I have worked on cleaning up the rust on the front bumper and cleaning the interior. I have the interior mostly out of the car since it was mostly taken apart anyway to thoroughly clean. Looks like it had paint dust or sanding dust all over it but it came off without too much trouble. Is there anything i can do about the stiff wrinkles on the seam on the lower part of my seats or would it have to be taken in. Seats are fine otherwise other then the normal wear on the driver's seat from getting in and out of these cars. Both seats have the wrinkles in the same spot on the lower section.

Mine have the same issue. I think its a common problem. I've been trying to get my leather softer been using saddle oil. Here is a link talking about it. http://www.starquest...le#entry1210549

Yea thx for the thread i am going to try some of that out. First a wet towel over it until i get some saddle oil or mink oil to put on it.

Ok I got the interior back together and cleaned up. I also got the body washed up. Whoever did the paint on this car I would not recommend for anyone. They did a piss poor job of masking. Overspray on all the windows and under the sunroof and exhaust was painted over. Just lazy prep work I have to clean up after. Bleh...1/2 tail work drives me nutzs when dealing with something nice and worth fixing. Also i have to fix a rust bubble on the lower part of a front fender that the guy just painted over instead of fixing. It is on the bottom of the fender but i want to kill off the rust and fix so it dont spread. Fun fun..

Next is to start cleaning and transfering parts from my parts conquest engine bay to the new quest

yea I am deffinately making progress took off the parts that go under the sunroof and painted them black. Took off the break booster so i could put in the front section of brake line the one on it was cut and the one on my parts car was good and already got it figured out how i am bypassing the ABS. I am slowly transplanting parts over from the parts car. I am deffinately glad I got my parts car because this car was missing a lot more then just the motor under the hood. The previous owner bought it without the motor so it was the owner before that. I plan on taking the car up to a family friend that owns a body shop to finish up the lazy painter's work. I figure i can get the motor in and running before then but leave the front clip off so our friend can finish the front and the other areas that need to get hit quick before i finally finish it off. Once i get some more noticeable progress more pics will be on the way.

Well things are coming together nicely so far(knock on wood). I was working on the brakes, hydraulic clutch, and engine bay wiring. And mounting more and more under the hood. It is starting to look like a quest under the hood again. I am glad I have a complete parts car though because this car was missing a lot under the hood. I was hoping it had a fuseable link harness, but it didn't and upon closer inspection mine was better then i thought it had been. I saw the one wire that Tye pointed out way back when that was the wrong type. But that was the only wire and the rest of the harness looks good. So another part I have to put on my order list for Dad's. Also I don't have the cover or whatever it is on either of my cars that covers the relays by the battery. The top peice going over the relay bundle is there and the screw to mount is still on my battery tray but the cover isnt. I don't even know what they look like but I would imagine it would make the corner by the battery a lot cleaner looking and then I can mount the fuseable link harness like it should be. It be nice to find one local so I dont have to shop around. I don't care if it needs a coat of paint. So I made good progress and here are todays pics. Feel free to comment.

Driver side looks like a Quest under the hood again but you can see the cover missing by the battery tray I spoke for. Rerouted the brakes and bypasses the abs and since i had the booster off to route the lines I gave it a coat of paint. Clutch is also all hooked up on top too. That fluid residue in the clutch container looked aweful I cleaned it out as best i could while it was all off.

Here is the current engine bay as it sits you can see the brake line is routed again and I got the wiper motor back in place. Also painted the backing to the motor cause it looked kinda rough and what the hell why not. I wonder how long after the car is running with the engine bay stay clean lol.

Probably will have another update tomarrow since things are going by quick up until I get to the point I am waiting on parts. I am still broke from going to get this thing lol. I wasn't planning on buying a car right now but this was something I couldn't let slip by.

I was feeling a bit lazy today so i did not do a whole lot. I picked up my exhaust manifold from my friends farm implement shop. We stress releived it and welded up the cracks then put it on the head surface grinder and got it flat again. On the car I masked off the sunroof gap and rattle can painted the groove along with the front. Hey its cheap its white and those areas don't see much sun :). Enjoy the pics.

I was looking today and I just realize this car has been wrecked at one point. Both frame rails where frame meets the front bumper are bent to the left a bit. I can see the bend starts in front of the front suspension but I wonder how the front clip will line up when its all said and done. It would kick the front bumper a smidge to the left i would imagine.

I thought things through last nite. For the frame issue being it may just be a bumper alignment and my bumper isn't in great condition anyway if it is off a bit I will just drill new holes in the bumper to off set and align it. Other decision I have made I am going to use my good shortblock for this car and use my current shortblock as my builder motor. My good shortblock needs bearings from a oil cooler not being cleaned out so it has light scratches on the mains but is easy repairable and only has 2500 miles after a shop rebuild. Everything else is fine on it and it even still shows the crosshatching from the honing yet. It is cheaper to just get new bearing for that than doing the crank balance elimination/new timing chain for the other and who knows the shape of the bearing on that one. Plus as far as i know the current shortblock is good too. Since i plan on getting nutz with 8:1 wisco pistons and going big in general i would have to do a lot of swaping in my redone shortblock so really there isnt a reason why not to use the shortblock with 2500 miles instead and to just build the other motor. Cost will probably be about the same when I am done anyway. Plus if I want to add a bit more power to this shortblock it already has hyper pistons and crank balance has been eliminated and who knows what other machine work has been done. I know it has been bore .040 over. Hmmm maybe Wideband tuner and a boost controller are in my near future along with having my modded turbo rebuilt. Maybe I could get it in the roughly 250hp range.

Well got most of the front end together. And officially i am going to have to do some hole work like i thought for the bumper it is off a bit but its not too far where with a bit of off set on the holes i should be able to get it lined up. Decided To elinimate cruise too so i can keep vaccum crap to a minimum.

Going to use my low miles engine that was shop built out so today I got it dug out and got the crank out to measure. This was the motor that oil cooler wasnt cleaned on. I cant really see on the pic but the crank has very light scratches on it. Only 2500 miles on the rebuild though. It isnt bad and i could use it like it is but I am taking it down to my buddy's shop tomarrow to get it mic'd because I recall hearing it was turned down so I want to get right sized bearings and i plan to ask about the scratches hell they might have something to polish it up quick.
