starquestaz
don't ask why... I still can't answer that... weight reduction? based off the section I weighed on the scale in a plastic bag I would say the total amount of tar would be roughly 45 - 60 lbs if it were all lumped up in a ball. It's really easy to get off once it's HOT. Luckily I live in AZ so it only took a few hours in the driveway with the doors/windows shut to reach optimal scraping temp. If you live somewhere cold maybe hit it with a heat gun or something but the whole section needs to be hot... but not too hot otherwise it will be all melty and you don't want that... just hot enough so it softens the tar. I got a scraper and got under one corner and rolled it like a burrito the whole section right off. Took about 2 hours for the whole car LOL.. I know I'm crazy http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a298/starquest/4-2.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a298/starquest/3-3.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a298/starquest/2-3.jpg http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a298/starquest/1-3.jpg Edited July 5, 2012 by starquestaz
NikoFab
wow, nicely done. i've also heard that you can hit it with refrigerant to get it really cold and brittle so it cracks off, never seen it done though. AshyBone
That's really cool. Good to know an easy way to get rid of a good 65 punds. What other ways can we drop the weight in these cars. I have a fatty and want to get it down to around 2700-2800 punds.

Shelby
now if you get that empty tin can sound you'l know why tar acts like an insulator and quietner helps reduce road noise
Scotty Dont
now if you get that empty tin can sound you'l know why tar acts like an insulator and quietner helps reduce road noise Mayybe some people don't care about that. Some people want to go fast and you can't hear the "tin can" noise over a roaring engine and wearing a helmet
starquestaz
I completely agree that the road noise and exhaust sound is much louder after you do this so be warned... it doesn't bother me though. I actually like being able to hear the exhaust louder inside the car. Edited July 6, 2012 by starquestaz

conquestTSIguy
I'm going to do the same thing, but use dynamat after it's all said and done.

conquestTSIguy
It's rather on the pricey side, but dynamat is incredible! Light weight and a much better sound barrier.
averse
Wouldnt dynamite blow up the car when you used it?
Burton
If y'all are in the south, I'd reccomend the spray in sound deadener. I haven't used Dynamat down here, but I have used Fatmat and B-Quiet sound deadening, and both started to melt in the TX sun. The Fatmat even ruined one of Kate's tan rear seat sides as that black tar streamed down and stained the leather. Even had a couple drips of it out of the headliner vent. The Dunamat may be better, but I am not really sure. I used Dynamat a lot in MI, and it seems identical to this other stuff I used, so I'd worry that the Dynamat may turn into Dynamelt.
