Mustang 13" Cobra Brake swap

Recommended Posts

Finally an update on this... Got the bracket mocked up and made everything clear! It does NOT work with stock wheels unfortunatly, as much as I wanted it too.. First and second temp. Might make 1 more before machining...

The mustang brakes will work for now. Unless I find deeper hats for these puppies...or get new wheels. I got a great deal on these 14" animals. Someday they will go on.

They are off of a mistu show car. I work with a guy who worked at thier cali studio and endend up with a bunch of sweet parts when they closed down. They are old, but have like 5 miles on them. If I can track down the hats I need for them I will def use them. I'm going to build another cleaner mock up today and hopefully do some milling next week.

Might sound dumb but u try contacting bear yet? Might be your best bet on new hats. Im sure u have prolly already thought of this tho. How hard was it to make the adapter brackets? Reason im so interested in this is i know way to many mustang guys around town so it wouldnt be any thing for me to get my hands on a set of cobra brakes. And i plan to delete the brake booster so the better brakes would be a nice plus.

Stocks for now. But I'm adding an extra caliper for the handbrake. I dont like how its all one system now. When I use the handbrake I often use the foot brake at the same time, I can feel the pressure "push back" the foot pedal. Doesnt effect the front brakes, but I dont like it. Got a little done today, going to rebuild the calipers while I have them apart. The inner seals seemed ok, but the dust boots are shot. Also going to either polish them or poweder coat them silver.

Convette, You are outta control!!!! and I like it. Seriously though, you set the bar really high with your car and its something you should be very proud of. When/if you get the brackets in production, you can count me in for a set. The car is awesome man.

The dual calipers should be pretty straight forward, I need to take a look at it, but I'm sure I could just make a bracket for it, maybe have to relocate the stock one.. Idk yet. I would have no problem making these for you guys, but like I said they DO NOT fit in stock wheels. I tried shp 9s and there's no way. The caliper is just too thick. Even with spacers it makes no difference. You must have at least 17" wheels for these to work. I did call Baer, they said the deepest ones they have are for a mustang, and still don't give me enough offset. Which I knida think is bs, almost felt like they didn't really want to deal with me cause I wasn't dropping 6k on a whole kit... Idk. I was contemplating milling my own, but like always, I'm cheap and want to do this as cost effectively as possible. I know there is a hat out there that will work, but for now I just want to see how the cobra set up works. Also so you guys know, I'm running a cobra booster and master cylinder. I'm not sure how they are going to act, I'm sure I will need a proportioning valve at some point...maybe. BC, thanks man. I'm very proud of what Ive been able to do with this old boat, and it will prolly never stop evolving.

Drilled and tapped that ish today. Bolts up like a dream. Going to do some clean up on these with the mill, but they work! Clearance is stupid tight, but since the caliper floats, the more they wear down, the more space I will have. I may run a 5 mill spacer just for fun. The section on these wheels is stupid as it meets the center. More to come. I want to test these throughly before making them for anyone.

I can't recall what you've got for a braking system, but I will say based off experience that both the stiffer suspension and larger front brakes will front bias the hell out of the system. ;)

After testing my balance bar, I've determined I either need to eliminate the stock proportioning valve or turn it down quite a bit. With the D2 coils, there just isn't as much front weight transfer as the car had stock.

I'm going to see what happends when its all hooked up. I might be ok, if I need to put a porp valve in, its no big deal. ( I'm not running the stock one anymore) The new suspension shouldnt be too much stiffer in the front, we'll see how it goes. I'm running the stock cobra booster and master so it should be spot on. Not really concerned with the rears right now.
