2JZ Swap for the Old Guy

Im not blazing any trails here... but I too am on the 2JZ bandwagon.

89 FIJI Quest was orginally an automatic. I am putting a 2JZGTE Auto drive line in the car.

Many thanks for the help I received from members already and I am sure I will be looking for more in the future.

I am starting this thread just to track the progress and maybe in some small part I can give back to the community with things I learn along the way.

That being said... My Fiji was originally an Arizona car that made it's way to NC. It was left for dead for a number of years until rescued by a gent down in SC. A lot of work was poured into the car to try and bring it back but those years of sitting weren't kind to it.

This is the car shortly after the cover was taken off in NC, complete with mold etc.

On its way home from SC. It had a bad gas tank and fortunately I decided to trailer it. It would never have made it otherwise.

But I replaced the tank above with a tank from David in Texas and I was up and running.

More to follow.

I plowed along trying to add my own touches, work my way through problems etc. I sorted out a problem with the injectors, bushings on the shifter, etc. etc.

I decided to mod the seats so I could have more leg room.

I haven't completed the passenger side but the driver's side seat will now go all the way back and nearly touch the rear seat.

The lap belts retractor is afixed under the rear seat.

I have all the leg room I need.

Just as it seemed I was turning the corner, the transmission decided to pack it in. I had a decision to make as to what I was going to do. I could have the transmission rebuilt or I could move on. I toyed with doing a V8 conversion but then stumbled across the 2JZ threads and I was hooked. So I decided to throw my lot in with the 2JZ crowd and here I am.

Obviously there is only room for one motor in the engine bay so this one had to go!

To be replaced with this one...

It has taken some time but it is slowly coming together.

Engine has new front and rear main seals, cam seals, timing belt, water pump. Valve cover gasket, thermostat, coil pack clips, aluminum radiator, O2 sensor, and complete AutoMeter Gauge package await installation.

ABS elimination has been completed and a rebuilt steering box is in place.

The engine and trans mounts have been fabbed and trial fit. Next week the engine comes back out of the car for final adjustment and painting of the mounts.

So far the automatic trans has fit in the tunnel with plenty of room. The yoke bolts on the output shaft of the trans and comes very close to hitting the bottom of the shifter. I don't know if I am going to be able to engineer the shifter to work or if I will have to resort to an aftermarket cable shifter. Time will tell. The drive shaft is going to be interesting. Since the yoke is not a slip joint into the trans I will need something custom made up to place a slip joint in the drive shaft someplace. Researching this now.

As the engine is installed the transmission mount lined up perfectly with the Mitsu trans crossmember. Had to drill holes in the crossmember to accomodate the trans mount but no issue there. The crossmember does need to be spaced down from the frame. Final spacing/spacers will be done on the next fitting. But all looks good so far.

I will update further as I go... and put pictures up from time to time.

Again thanks to all!

very very good AZ guess you wont be needing that auto tran thats commin with my 2j :)

I've never needed the transmission. What I was looking for was a part associated with an auto transmission. Many of these engines ship with the front part of the drive shaft (in Japan they cut off the front 6" or so) attached to the yoke in the transmission. Mine didn't come with it. So I have my yoke (if it is even called that) but not the matching piece on the drive shaft and the rubber "donut" that goes between them.

I think I have the one off of mine if you need it let me know.

Well, got some work done on the project today. Pulled the motor and finalized the motor mounts. On the driver's side I had intended on doing just 4 bolt holes but once the motor was positioned and the mounts tack welded one of those holes became unaccessable. So added some plate to the front and now have 5 bolt holes in use.

The driver's side mount:

On the passenger side we have very little clearance between the mount and the exhaust manifold. Trimmed off the "ear" on the manifold that the support brace attached to. I am going to have to put some thermal protective wrap around the motor mount before I put it in. Hope to pick that up tomorrow.

The passenger's side mount:

The ear that had to be trimmed:

Tomorrow I hope to get my coil clips sorted out. Several of them are bad so I am going to replace the whole lot.

what did you cut the ear off with? also I was talking yesterday with my old machanic's worker who did swaps in the island. he said to make sure the tranny lines up level with the rear annnnnnnnnd (get this) the intake side should be slightly higher. Now i dont kno if this is old school shade tree logic or not as every 2j swap seems to have the engine on a level pitch. anybody ever heard of this??

Used a SAWZ-ALL (reciprocating saw) with a fine tooth metal cutting blade. Cut it with no problem.

When the spacers are built for the rearend it will line up almost level with the rear end. May not be 100% exact.

Remember a car with a live rear axle the pumpkin moves up and down with the axle. So the angle to the trans is constantly changing. There are parameters (degrees) beyond which you don't want to go but an offset is inevitable. Matter of fact some years ago I read that a small offset in the drive shaft is desirable. I think it was because of the way universal joints work.. they have to have some off set.

The trans will be straight with the rear end side to side... but again, I may have a couple degrees variance in the vertical plane.

Never heard of tipping the engine.
