have an 89 starion with a blown head gasket.   I am wanting to rebuild the engine and would like anyone's opinion/expertise/etc. I want to create as much horsepower with the stock motor if possible. I will be upgrading as much "bolt-on" pieces as possible but from everyones experience what would be the best set up to create at least 300 hp or even just a bit less without blowing up my budget. I have an 89 quest. When I picked it up a year and a half ago it came with no cat ( I imagine thats why my O2 code won't go away) some guy was trying to make it into a drift car. The engine has been rebuilt and for the most part it runs great but it has this tick that is bugging me. It will tick for about 15 to 17 miles (distance to work) then it goes away. any ideas what it could be?
