Where to go for 12a or 14g upgrade to a..........super/big 16g

So lately ive been having some major electrical issues. 13-14v idle/driving until fans kick on or heater fans on full blast. Battery didnt seem to be charging so I sourced an alt locally and charged my battery. Turns out the alt is a 86 alt and through research I found the differences in amps and electrical connector ect.   So I guess my question is there any harm in running the 86 alt until I get the 87 unit rebuilt or running it period?
