Window Trim and Glass Support Felt

Greetings,

I had planned to repair or replace the little felts in my doors to prevent them from scoring the glass. I hadn't planned on doing it tonite. However I accidentally locked the keys in the car, AAA sent a gorilla out who dented the B pillar trying to get in the car, I ran him out of the yard, and proceeded to pull the trim and get myself in. (quick summation)

Grabbed a couple of pictures of the felts still in the car, sadly I didn't get any when I had them on the bench after I cleaned them.

To get to the little felts pull the trim on the bottom of the door window (where your arm would rest if you had it hanging out of the car). It just clips on, so if you pull up evenly across the whole trim it will eventually come free. The clips might come off with the trim or it might stay on the door. In any event remove the clips and attach them to the trip for reinstall.

I put the trim pieces in the tub to soak. The felt material all along it was grime caked and nasty. After soaking and scrubbing with a hard toothbursh they perked right up.

The felts are little clips (pictures show them) that just pull off the door. My felts were grime and dirt caked and you can see the amount of filth on the window as well. I soaked the felts in a dish of water for an hour or so while I ate supper. Came back, used the brush and gently cleaned them. They came back very nicely.

Reinstall is just the opposite of disassembly. I also cleaned the lower edge of the glass (that you usually can't get to) to get rid of the built up filth.

Hope this helps someone.

And we all have scratched up windows.

Sometimes, the simple solution eludes us, yes?

Great tip AzStar. This needs to be in FAQ.

Tim

Tks... if it is going to be FAQ material I'd like to rewrite it and do some better pictures etc. I'd also leave out the part about the bozo from AAA.

I knew of the felt issue from years back when I had my Palermo Grey, sadly, I had no idea it was as easy to fix or address as it was. I had visions of something buried down inside the door, not a 10 minute (with an hour soak/supper break) job.

For me the felt cleaning is going to be something that I do on a semi annual basis.

Cheaper than trying to replace the glass!
