j5
I thought I saw someone with a spring mod for the distributer here? What spring kit did you buy? Where can I get a stock replacement? The dealer wants me to buy the whole distributer!
Distorted.Clarity
there are 2 spings inside the distrib. you take the softer spring *from one from the junk yard or what ever* and replace the harder spring with that one.. i will be doing this but will be buying a new dis. because mine is so old.. *im just like that*
shift1313
whenever you do a mod you should really know what your doing or changing and what it will do to the car. by replacing a stiffer spring with a softer spring your letting the mechanical advance, advance quicker in the rpm range. im not sure if it ups your overall advance or not. i dont know the difference in the spring rates but im the type of person that would find out before performing a mod like this. j5
Yup We don't know whats up. Friend's got a MPI set up with sds fuel only controls. It  has a dead spot between 2k and 3k we tried everything but the spring mod. Fuel is going in but not pulling as hard till 3k We started with a soft spring from a starion dizzy. The max advance is 33* limited by the travel slot near the governor weights. Our goal is to bring in some advance sooner. What we found is 20* advance with diaphrgam plugged in at 2k with no load. 10* advance at 2k with diaphgram unpluged. What were dong is as follows. Put in the springs,  vac. tube blocked off and vac/rtrd actuator unpluged. Timing gun with dial set to zero. Bring revs up to 2k and hold. Turn dial up till timing mark on pulley lines up to TDC mark on front case.  Then check 3k revs doing the same thing. Then check total timing under vac. using Mity vac pump on adv/rtrd actuator. If you are donig this turn your boost down and if you have a fuel controler  use it. We still don't have a real grasp on this mod so I'll keep you posted if we bust something. Still no cookie on the flat spot.
j5
Good news we didn't bust anything! Got rid of the flat spot between 2k-3k rpms. We used 1 Moroso spring bought from our local domestic hot rod shop. Springs sold as pairs only, Â cost us $6. Springs were for 1955 and up Mopar distributer. The softest ones. If any of you try it, Â I would suggest investing in a very good timing gun with a timing dial on it. Base timing was not changed with softest springs installed and diaphgram unpluged @ 2000 rpm. ( 0 psi boost ) Timing is @ 10* advance. Â ( stock setting ) With diaphgram pluged in @ 2000 rpm, Â timing was at 23* advance. Total advance @ 3000 rpm with diaphgram unpluged is at 28* advance. 33* with diaphgram pluged in @3000rpm. The car's settup is tep cam, 16G turbo, MPI, MSD 6a, sds fuel only controler. Kryten93
Â im not sure if it ups your overall advance or not. Â i dont know the difference in the spring rates but im the type of person that would find out before performing a mod like this. Im the guy who made the post about this mod origanally ;D anyway basically all this mod does is allows the distributor to advance at a lower rpm. and this improves the lowend throttle response of the engine. its a little hard to tell in the 5spd, well for me it was. but the autos really respond well to this mod. since they are kinda a dog off the line. just a bit of advice. if your not putting in a new distriburor you will want to tear the advance system apart and clean the top of the distributor very well. it tends to get gummed up pretty bad. for full details i have it posted on strion i-x forum http://starquest.i-x.net/viewtopic.php?t=148 let me know if you have any questions.
