I am actually picking this car up from another member in the area. I should be paying it off and picking it up in a week. I have spent a few weeks reading all the information I could find. This is what I have come up with.

-----Restoration-----

Front trim between headerpanel+bumper Needs sanding and painting probally going to open it up for more air flow (same as front bumper.)

Front bumper(need a new one here its rough)

Headlight covers (one might be a little uneven/bent.)

Front air dam (going to the 88/89 one piece.)

Header panel (Also going to open this up for better airflow)

Cowl hood + correct hood pinning (Going to delete the hood release. I just dont want to worry about a hood flying up on me. I am still torn on keeping the original lines, or going with the 83 hood, or staying bone stock. The cowl hood offers help for heat soak issues under the hood.)

Passenger turn signal lense

Rear bumper (Nothing wrong with it, but I am trying to figure out if it is going to be easier to get paint to stick to a new non-painted or the one on it.)

Driver side fender (Just easier to pull it, and put a new one on.)

Driverside door (Possibly have it heated and pulled.) (Small ding but is on a line/seam.)

Passenger 1/4 (Has a small dent probally can be pulled but on the outer door jam seam going to outside panel it is a little tweaked, not sure if this can be fixed with minimal work, or if it needs to be a cut paste job.)

Driverside doorpanel (The only bad spot on the interior is a smal tear from sitting in the sun a bit much easily recovered or replaced.)

Shp wheels/tires Dunlop sp8000's 245-45s rear/ front 225-50 or 235-45 not sure yet (I like the twistes so sidewall stiffness is an important key to me.)

Re-black all trim (Outside that is.)

All new seals - weatherstripping (Own a leaky targa once... lol...)

Steering wheel - Looking like the ones from grant (Not to big on the flash so no to the momo, sparco, etc. The grant works well with the 80's style interior.)

Paint - Staying stock red just new

----Basic Performance Upgrades----

3" exhaust (Holy crap the stock down pipe made me want to cry that thing is so tiny. I do see why a 3" exhaust may be a bit to much on these powerplants, the turbo is tiny compared to a 62-1 to4e. But in the interest of not buying 2 exhausts Im going 3" from the start.)

Intake filter (Ive decided on a blitz sustech)

Hard pipes (Thinking 2.25" or 2.5", and redoing the intercooler to accept that size as well, but Id love to hear advantages/disadvantages of 2.5")

Bov (Looking like the turboxs RFL model, just need to confirm it will work correctly at sub 15psi boost pressure)

a/f gauge (Will be getting a wideband 02 sensor)

Boost gauge

Coolant temp

Boost controller (greddy the simple one without fuzzy logic can not for the life of me remember the name of it.)

crankvents (Wish I would of had those on my supra)

walbro 255lph fuel pump (Seems like this will be enough)

front+rear strut bars (I did not notice much flex on my test drive, but I like to corner so these are always nice to have. Also interested to know if anyone has ever installed lower tie bar/ bars)

kyb uprade from stocker strut/shock (Not lowering this thing)

----Advanced Performance Upgrades----

14g/16g/super16g/19c Leaning for 14g better than stock and more in line with my 260whp goal. would love to hear opinions

Marnel nonjet head (duh. probally for second motor)

FIP-Pro2 tb or Mpfi (Id like to stay tbi. Wow huh?!? I think I can reliably make 260whp although weather I stay with stock tbi or go fippro2???? Opinons welcome.)

stainless tubular exhaust header (They seem cheap enough. Still need to read more about this though. Input/opinions/experience welcomed. Will this help anything on the tbi setups?)

Forged bottom end + goodies (I have a 2nd motor to build.)

----Other----

Sterio (This one might be tricky. Im still reading about this one.)

Tint (Cuts down on heat and prying eyes.)

Hoses (goodyear/silicon not sure which.)

belts/chain/ tensioner (Normal check and replacement.)

New ground straps (Seems like these get neglected alot on older cars.)

Radiator I want more cooling capacity. (Be that from larger or aluminum. I want the big aftermarket one.)

Bushings and rubber replacement with polyurethane or new oem parts (Anyone using a poly urethane bushings? I had )

Stainless breaklines (Full flush and a Caliper check. How much differnce does the abs delete make?)

Good breakpads (Any reccomendations.)

New full synthetic amsoil products for all applicable fluids.

Cruise delete/ac delete (already done) / egr delete (Probally not untill next head.)/ basic clean up and replacement of vac lines, etc.

Possibly a new wireharness or repair sections as needed (Had a 7mgte supra was a freakin nightmare underthe hood)

Althought the leather is in excellent shape for age with no rip tears I am thinking of aftermarket seats. Just not sure since I have a big a**.

Msd blaster coil (Seems like an ok sidestep/upgrade from stock. Opninons?)

As far as the power potential goals.. I have decided to shoot for 260whp The 300hp area is where alot of gray area begins. Seems like I should think about this now and decide to go one route, but nothing is that easy. As far as my 1/4 mile time Id really like to be a mid to low 13. Without slicks of course. Im interested to hear what turbo will do this job. The rest of the equation lies with the required reliability factor, which yes I am aware that most of that is related to driving habits and maintence. Then their is the last factor... Cost. Finding the balance of all of these are usually the tricky part. I guess I need to decide if being sub 300hp on TBI is good enough or if I really need more power for the times I would like the car to pull. If so then I suppose mpfi is the only route. I havent seen any posts definately saying that the fip pro2 tbi unit will be enough for reliability around 300-350hp.

I will try to keep this thread up to date. I have always kicked myself with the cars I have owned in the past that I did not take pictures of and did not keep track of the before and after for others to see.

Those are the plans. Glad to almost be part of the starquest family. Any questions/comments/etc please feel free to pm me or contact me through any of the various messengers.

Here are some pics of the quest. I will update with more when I pick it up.

And no the 83 hood was sold locally by the owner. It has a stock red hood now. As I said I plan to go with the cowl hood that a few of the members sport here in the forums.

Yea left a few things out, Has a set of 8" rear rims in all 4 corners, those are going bye bye. Looking for a set of SHP wheels as we speak. And someone that might want the set of 8" rears (4).

Also 67k miles on this one. Paid $1800. Has a rebuilt motor, when, how many miles is unknown but the primer looks semi recent. I also have the old motor and tranny.

When I pick it up Ill run a compression check. Ran very strong, although the tps needs to be reset.

So, you didn't opt to buy that ferrari in the background? :D

You might want to check your front rims. as they look like the rear's off another car.

Not ferrari, fiero, and if your interested, ill sell that complain too, lol. Good Luck man, like i said, ill help you out anyway i can.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just an update to the madness.

So far I have bought a set of proper offset non-shp wheels with kumho supras on them. Yes the dry rot may pops are gone and the old wheels were traded for an 89 ecu. Yes the 89 ecu is in. A/F and Boost for the time being. Installed in a 3 gauge panel from Joly. 1g mas is waiting for the 1g lid to be sad blasted and painted, then I will slap the nifty k&n on it and install. 2.5" dp and exhaust also installed.

Today I removed the cc for more room and to clean up some things. After I finished I noticed just how many vac lines the emissions equipment has and rippedout the whole system and started from scratch. No vacuum pump, resvoir, evaporator or anything. I put a piece of aluminum can between the egr disc and intake mani untill I can get a real block off plate made and installed. Removed all the rest of the crap on the intake side from emissions minus the thermovalve untill I pickup an aftermarket coolant temp sensor to put it.

I am lacking the correct tools to put in the ever needed ecu coolant temp switch wich is still bad.

All in all I do notice a much stronger idle with less miss, although that is still moot untill the ecu coolant temp sensor is installed. Hopefully a crecent wrench or something will do the job since none of my sockets fit over it or wrenches around it.

Coming soon: 2" hard pipes and a BOV, compressor surge is the devil and I think atleast one of my cloth pipes has a tiny hole in it.

Well guys, I think I'll keep this thread alive. I just bought this car from Ben this week. I got it back to the house this afternoon and took a few pictures. I'll try to get those posted sometime tomorrow.

It jumped time, so it will be a few weeks before I get the time to fix it. I don't plan to do near as much as Ben intended for this car, I just need to keep it running reliably since this will be my DD. The Starion will be parked by the end of the month and I will begin the rebuild and mpi swap.

Here's the pics. Looks rougher in the pics than it actually is. The interior is still in good shape. Car itself only has 68k miles on it.
