Indiana
I'd tear it down and clean it minimum. In/out it shouldn't move at all. if the bearings and thrust plate are still good you might put on a new rear seal. Seals are about $

Indiana
You got to see what a turbo that was spinning in a really lean fuel mix looks like.......white.
mikej
how much up and down play? I finally got my quest running up to par today (stock). but yesterday when i removed the cat, i had quite some up and down movement in the turbo. i didnt see any signs of scrapping or rubbing, but today i fired her up and during acceleration i can hear a slight hum coming from the turbo area. Indiana
Ebay rebuild kits are about 50.00. If you have a bench grinder, get a rag wheel and some polishing compound and if the shaft has any markings from where the bearings are smooth those best you can. The shaft is suspended in oil but marks just slow it down. The only other area to look at is the back of the cartridge where the shaft/seal seats. There's a taper in the opening and just inside there's a groove, clean the old burnt oil out of that groove. They are easy to rebuild, if you stack the pieces up wrong you'll know because it won't spin. Use loctite on that nut holding the compressor wheel on. You use a12pt wrench/socket on the end of the turbine shaft This is an old shaft I bead blasted then used polishing compound on before/after http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM002069.JPG http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM002100.JPG http://www.b2600turbo.com/images/IM002111.JPG Edited March 9, 2012 by Indiana

Indiana
Very important that before the engine starts, you crank it over enough to get oil back into the cartridge. You can prime it using a syringe.
Lance_S
Pull the studs and grind the mounting flange flat on both the manifold and the turbo housing.
apate
Pull the studs and grind the mounting flange flat on both the manifold and the turbo housing. I did not pull the exhaust housing off the car I just pulled the intake housing and cartridge.
