For those of you that don't know i work at a metal fab shop. It was brought up recently that frame rails are becoming quite scarce.SO i went over making new ones with my boss and he's pretty down. My car is currently at the shop and my rails are JACKED up from the mis-use of jacks and them being 20 years old. So I'm going to get him to make me a set and wanted to know if anyone else is interested. price will be made up in the next couple of days. But if you are interested i need you to post here! thanks Jason

Lurking around and saw your post about. Id be interested in a set. My passenger frame rail is quite rusted. My interest depends on how much of course and how much of the frame rail are you talking about 2ft, 3ft? Thanks for taking interest in doing this.

Isn't there some kind of special adhesive for joining metal components like this? The old frame could be cleaned with a wire brush or sanded, then put this http://www.masterbond.com/tds/supreme11ht.html (the non-drip version) on the new part and then fasten/press it over the damaged section.

IDK dood anything that is structural should be welded in...

Some of those structural adhesives are pretty damn sturdy. I've seen tests of the Norton brand stuff and they took two pieces of steel, glued them with the adhesive, and pulled them apart- The metal failed before the glue.

That being said, I still wouldn't want to trust that glue on a frame piece, no matter how good it is. But, I guess it would work for someone who didn't have the resources to weld in new pieces.

If you do make some, I may be down for a set too, if the price is right. I don't have any cars right now that need frame rails, but it might not be a bad idea to keep a set of spares in case I ever do.

I understand and partially agree with the welding concept but consider these three things:

  1. As Burton mentioned "The metal failed before the glue"
A weld has a contact point that is only as large as the weld seam
The adhesive would have a contact point of 100% of the new frame rail to the existing frame

I would be willing to bet that the adhesive concept; with the correct adhesive!, would be stronger than welding and it would be sealed from rust.

really strong glues such as epoxy do not flex and it would eventually break due to the vibration. on the other hand there are urethane glues and such that do flex and also have incredible holding power but it would not be strong enough to handle the force on a structural component like that over time I'm sure there is some technical term for what i am talking about that would make more sense but i do not know it. welding is the way to go if you can get access to a welder.

it is a good concept but in reality when exposed to the varying temps and un predictable potholes and such it would not work. tho yes there are good applications for glues of the sort. even in a car just not in the frame rails... it could even be a good method if it was a race car with an unlimited budget that gets rebuilt after every race i just don't see it working on a street car.

IMO

Why not do both?

okay so we made up a couple testers today. For a driver and passenger side that are 15 and 15.5 inches long, were looking at about $75 a set plus shipping for 18 gauge steel. Dave went with 16 gauge on his and really there's only 10 thousandths of an inch difference inbetween the two, that and cost... For 16 gauge were looking around 85 a set without shipping. We can also do longer ones if needed. Does that pricing sound reasonable? i though it did as last time i saw one new oem frame rail up for sale it was in the $250 are. Need some opinions guys! Might be able to do a the more people that buy, the cheaper they get thing aswell. Need your imputs!

Edit, no diamond plate allowed lol!
