Dave-O
I'm getting lucky with the factory Cobra shorties - I plan on flipping them to face forward, and will run them into a single T3 flange for a T70 in front of the water pump. Even if I don't initially turbocharge it, I'll probably luck out since I'm using the Cobra steering rack as well.
A.Wilder
How do you use the mustang steering rack?
Convette
check my build. I'm using one.
Dave-O
I'm following John [idriftjunk]'s build as far as his steering setup is concerned. About the only thing he and I have in common with the build though, is that we're using the same steering rack, I'm going to use the full Cobra spindle, strut, and front brake setup, but I'll have to modify the LCAs and tension rods to keep interference to a minimum. A.Wilder
http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w239/johnboy9788/102_2873.jpg Is that how low the rack will hang? or is that just a "seeing how it will work" pic? How did you extend your steering to the mustang rack? What is needed to connect the tie-rod to the Starion knuckle? Does this allow you to run longtube headers? Dave-O
If I'm not mistaken, that's actually how low the rack is in the car, but the oil pan and transmission are lower.
Convette
thats and old pic that should be removed.. I was trying all mustang stuff up front but the geometry gets rather difficult when you get out to the wheels/hubs/brakes. http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w239/johnboy9788/1269732931.jpghttp://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w239/johnboy9788/1269482105.jpg http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w239/johnboy9788/65aca63b.jpgThe oil pan will be flush with the cross member( about 1" higher than in this pic.)I'm having custom knuckels cnc'd (next week). I'm going to build my own headers, due to clearance issues. Edited May 17, 2010 by idriftjunk
A.Wilder
Are there other ways of improving the steering or relocating the box? Looking at your build it looks like a lot of work that i don't have the resources to do myself so it would be very expensive.
Convette
The steering box setup is as old as it gets. Even in perfect working order, it won't give you the same feel and feedback as a rack and pinion.
A.Wilder
while i totally agree that the oem steering box is junk, it looks like a lot of work that will cause other problems with exhaust clearance. Have you figured out how you are going to run your exhaust? is there a rack that can be mounted behind the k member similar to where the oem tie rods are placed? I imagine that placement would allow geometry closer to oem. Going to look at the mustang again today and look at some other things. Is there anything i can check on the transmission or engine? i read about checking the harmonic-dampener for play, is this still a good thing to check? Should i bring my voltmeter and check electric components? Edited May 18, 2010 by A.Wilder
Convette
You could use a nissan 240sx rack and keep it in the stock location as its a "rear steer" system, like the quest is stock. I know nothing about the ford stuff..sorry..lol
tim si
everything looks ok from the pics except i noticed a funny oil filter or seperator in-line from the valve cover to the throttle body.you might check it out and maybe check for blow by.how many miles on it?its a pretty tough engine in close to stock form.how does the tranny shift also? It looks like some kind of fuel filter, its clear and just yellowed a little bit. The motor is mostly stock, he said the heads have some work but he is not 100% sure what was done. Sounds mean, and no knock or valve noise. Didn't drive it as it needs new pads and rotors BAD. like too scary to drive period. But the shifter shifts smoothly. Clutch has high throw-out which my friends say is typical of the T5. Should i just try and part out the Mustang piece by piece or do you think it would be easier to sell as a roller with no engine/trans/harness? I'm thinking it may be better to just part out since i will be removing most of the wiring harness and that could be a real deal-breaker to some people, but i have no idea what the mustang crowd is into. She shell does have a clean V8 title with no wrecks/rebuilds so maybe that is worth something? I know i could get some quick cash for the pony wheels, rear-end, and random trim/glass/etc. I will pick it up today and hopefully have some pics and vids to share! I want to fix the brakes on the mustang and drive it around town for a bit to get a feel for the engine and transmission and have a good baseline for how things should run and feel. Also find out if there are any undisclosed problems before i start the swap. See how it holds up to a few hours of driving around hot and humid SC

A.Wilder
boom!http://i177.photobucket.com/albums/w239/johnboy9788/bla.jpg it took me a second, but i loled! hahahahaha Well after a lot of people have put in their input i might end up trying to sell this mustang. My friends who flip cars all the time say i could make 2-3k off it easy since its only missing interior pieces, has a clean V8 title and runs pretty good. So don't get attached! Dave-O
Wow, that's a stupid clean Fox body. Mind if I ask what you picked it up for? If the rest of the car is as clean as the pics indicate, I have no reason to believe the wiring and running gear is any less minty.
A.Wilder
got the mustang for $2k. Drove it around all weekend. Needs a few things but nothing major. Runs real strong but needs a lot of suspension improvements for what i want to do, which is auto-x. Found some killer suspension set-ups for dirt cheap, another $2k in suspension and it will be tough to beat. So, i doubt this will be going in the Starion anytime soon
Dave-O
Hahahahaha. Found a new love, I see. If I had a title with my Cobra parts car, I'd have built it up as a weekend warrior, but no such luck, and I can't register a car on auction paperwork, haha. Just don't forget about the SQ!
