MAF-T tuning hope this helps someone out.

This is what a Stock Quest showing what the readings are from a wideband O2 Sensor.

Quote:

I did for several years on a perfectly running Starion. Idle SHOULD BE 12.5-13.5 if the nose switch is working correctly, if its not sending the ground signal it will hunt around 14.7. Under boost it drops to 12 and in cruise you can watch it hunt from 14.4-15.2, back and forth.

The lookup table for the MAF output is 5X7 or 35 tuning points.

I wanted to tune the maft t using the stock wide band readings from a stock quest.

Since I tuned my car with the settings that Scott provided above it has ran perfectly.

Every car is different and you need to be careful when tuning and boosting.

This is not for installing only tuning.

Tuning the MAF-T

1st select the proper GM MAF sensor your using per the guide.

On the MAF-T you have 5 dials

BASE, AUX, IDLE, MID, WOT,

Once you have the proper setting for the MAF sensor now you have to set the

BASE and AUX settings for your injector size per the Guide.

Take the 2 injectors your using and add them together, Then divide by 4.

EXAMPLE:

650 + 1050 = 1700 CC / 4 = 425

Set the MAF-T to 430 cc injector setting.

Per the 1st GEN MAF-T Guide injector setting section.

The Guide states that the 1st GEN setting BASE 0AUX 0 = 430 CC injector settings.

START the CAR

Using the wideband gauge you need to adjust the IDLE dial to get the car to idle at

12.5 to 13.5 on the Wide Band Gauge.

The other dials are set to 0. MID and WOT

Rev the car a few times. Make sure it does not stall.

Drive the car,

Find a road that is not busy. Drive the car at 35 to 40mph.

You want a constant cruising speed. Keep an eye on the WB gauge.

You want the gauge to be around 14.4 to 15.2 during this constant

cruising speed. If it is rich or lean adjust the BASE dial leaner or richer

accordingly. You want the wide band gauge to read 14.4 to 15.2 at a continuous cruising speed.

i have changed gears from 3rd to 5th and maintained the speed at 40 and the gauge read the same.

Once you achieve this with consistency, now you will have to recheck your

Idle and again adjust the IDLE dial so the wideband at idle is 12.5 to 13.5.

Now that your IDLE and Cruise is set, you will start to give the car some light boost.

¼ to mid throttle. Light acceleration not much boost.

As you touch the gas pedal and start to accelerate. The tip in

on the gauge might go rich or lean. Now you adjust the MID DIAL.

Adjust it so that your light acceleration is near 12.5 to 13.0. You will have to

Adjust to see what is best for your cars setup you might need it richer. Once you

can transition from Cruise to light throttle acceleration and it pulls nicely the MID dial

is for when the car transitions to boost. if it bogs here as you go from steady cruise to

light boost the mid dial fixes the rich or lean stumble as you press the gas or tip in.

this is for light throttle. the mid is for when you want to give it a 1/4 or 1/8 of more pedal.

5 PSI or less kind of adjustment.the transition to WOT. dumps a little extra fuel.

WOT Dial

Just what it says. Once the car runs good you will full boost the car and

have your co pilot check the gauge. Make sure the wide band gauge

is around 11.3. Adjust the WOT Dial accordingly.

In my opinion the MAF-T is a sloppy tuning tool. Only 5 % increments per click.

Unless you get the RPM signal hooked up then you have 2% increment adjustments.

Read the guide on how to use that.

On a side note I had trouble getting the wideband gauge to read 11.3 to 11.5 on

Wide OPEN Throttle with my car. My car was running 10.4 on my wideband gauge.

If I adjusted the MAF-T WOT DIAL one click lean. The Wide band was reading

12.xx. what I was able to do on my car was adjust the fuel pressure to 41 PSI.

My car has an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. Then I retuned the car and now

was able to get the car to a nice 11.3-11.5 reading on the gauge.

Because my MAF-T is in the engine bay, I had to pull over many times and make

Adjustments to the MAF-T. some tuning steps may need to be repeated. ALSO as

the weather changes you might notice that the car might need to have some adjustments.

Seasonal changes might be necessary.

I hope this helps someone out.

to add to the above:

when you set the BASE and AUX settings you might

be around a 430cc injector size. When you go out

and drive the car at a constant 40 MPH, you will pull

over and adjust the BASE DIAL to try and achieve the

14.4 to 15.2 cruising Wideband setting. Once you get

the car steady at the range of 14.4 to 15.2 at cruise,

the actual Base setting will not be set at the 430cc

injector setting. The injector setting will be different.

it could be 500cc or higher. that is expected. Do not

be alarmed or surprised.

once AUX and BASE are set now adjust the IDLE DIAL

to as above settings.

Just an update:

I had a hiccup and or detonation problem when i was crising and would press the pedal.

Kind of like when you want to give it some gas to boost but not shift to a different gear.

The car would seem to buck and load up then detonate - misfire.

What i did to fix this i just adjusted the BASE knob one click at a time untill it went away.

i did not change any other dial or adjustment knob.

Summary:

BASE adjustment– this 16 position (0-F) dial is used to set the general airflow scaling.

This adjustment affects the entire operating range of RPM and is generally used

to match the Translator and MAF to the selected injector size.

This BASE adjustment adjusts the entire fuel curve from idle to WOT max rpm as if it is just one

solid curve. The overall span from idle to max RPM will be richer or leaner with the BASE

adjustment knob -dial.

So if you are cruising at a steady pace then lightly press the gas and the 02 sensor goes too lean

adjust the base knob to try and fix the what I refer to as "TIP IN".

You might need to adjust the idle again but this will fix the tip in lean out on the car when it transitions to boost.

Found this info form an older post.

Here is a complete list of the connections from a 87 - 89 MAS plug to a MAF Translator connection. In case you have cut your wiring from a previous MAF install, or want to solder the wires together for a better connection.

87-89 MAS plug-------------------------------------------Wire colors on MAF-T

1 - Green/red#2 - (5V)-----------------------------------NC (no connect)

2 - Red - (battery +12V )--------------------------------Pink (+12VDC)

3 - White/black - (AFS)----------------------------------Green (Translator frequency signal)

4 - Green /red #1 - (Intake Temp)-----------------------Brown (Intake Temp)

5 - Black/white #3 - (Barometric pressure)------------Gray (Barometric Pressure)

6 - Black/white #4 - (Ground)----------------------------Black (Ground)

It's been discussed within many different post topics but I wanted to specify it completely for easy connecting. Also, here is the 87-89 MAS Plug pinout.

---------------------------------

| 1Power | 2Power | 3Air Sen. |

---------------------------------

| 4Temp. | 5Press. | 6Ground |

----------------------------------

Hopefully this helps someone with cut wires and no DSM 1G MAS to compare against.
