Didn't get much done in April as I've been focusing on getting the Toyota back on the road for May... Just swapped the 65 amp 86 alternator to the 75 amp unit from 87s and up.
The alternator pulley had to be swapped out to the 86 as the v-belts are slightly different. Also, the harness had to be rewired and a resistor added. Luckily I had many parts left over from my departed 88.
Combined the 86 and 88 charge harness diagrams to make sense of everything:
Added an additional ground from the alternator to the block
Old connector to the new connector:
Doubled up on the 12ga wire for the alternator output:
Connector for the resistor that needs to be added to the harness:
Resistor mounted next to the coil:
Mounted and grounded:
I think at this point my camera battery went dead, but I had to add another fuse to the charge harness based on the diagram in the first picture. It fit in nicely where I had previously installed the Mazda fuse box. Good thing about this swap is now that I can upgrade to the higher amperage Hyundai or Montero alternators if the need ever arises. Thats all for April, see you soon for May.....hopefully....
