tsi_tom
I am looking to do some custom sheet metal work. What kind should I get for automobiles and gas tanks? Where do you purchase your sheet metal?
BC_99
20 ga or 22 ga mild steel for body panels depending on how much shaping and welding you intend to do with it. For a fuel cell, stainless or aluminum. BC_99 Edit, I get mine from one of 2 local metal suppliers, stock car steel or race city steel. You need to search your area for suppliers. tsi_tom
I have read that some of the sheet metal is aluminized. For example:http://continentalsteel.com/Carbon-Steel/sheet-and-coil-steel.asp Do you use the aluminized sheets? By the way the stock tank is steel, so why not make it out of that? Britt, http://www.stockcarsteel.com/ That is a nice site. I like how it give the example for use. Thanks! Are you using the Cold Rolled 1008 Steel Sheet? BC_99
Yes mostly but it depends on the application. We never use aluminized steel because it's nasty to weld. It's used for heating and air duct work in houses mostly. I recommend aluminum or stainless for a fuel cell (assuming you are building a full custom cell) because it's corrosion resistant, where as mild steel will rust. Plus a stainless or aluminum tank hanging out from under the back of a car just looks bad tail. BC_99
