  1. a little more info on the cars: the red 88- 5 speed (was an auto at one time) 16G, cnm cam, cnm exhaust, ARE wheels w/good rubber, black leather, lowering springs, straight body, a little faded, one small spot of rust above driver side rear wheelwell. newer clutch, brakes, fidanza flywheel. my 87_ black/black, 3" exhaust, 5 speed, ASE wideband & boost control, 9" & 8" wheels, previous owner decided to cut off some rust by rear wheelwells >:-( but gave me body panels from another Tsi, occasional ticking from valvetrain: i thought it may be the balance shafts, so i eliminated them, but it still ticks. i don't think its a rod, because it doesn't do it all the time, & i've been driving it for a year this way. i will try to get my hands on a camera in the next few days for pics, my # is 402-203-1857 thanks
  2. hi, i live in omaha, NE, have an 87 tsi i drive weekly, and an 88 in my garage which would not take much to get going (it funs, but rough; i think it may either be a tps problem or exhaust manifold issue, both items of which i have different ones to try) I have wanted a porsche 944 for some time now. both of my cars are for sale, $1000 for the 88, $1500 for the 87 obo, or trade for a 944. contact me at martygreco@hotmail.com for more info as i am rarely on this site thx for any interest
  3. Check to see if your Lady's alarm system is activated by looking at the dash indicator SECURITY light after going to lock , holding the outside door handle up and closing the door - after recharging the battery. If it does not go on, then the ETACS computer is toast - especially if it's an '87 Starquest.

Have you tried to jump start the car and hooked up the jumper wires wrong? If so, you have toasted ETACS.

If ETAC's is shot then it will constantly drain the battery even with the ignition switch OFF.

Ya gotta replace the ETAC computer.

    For What It's Worth

    KEN

i have a similar (well, same) prob. on my 87. where/what is the ETACs? thx marty

  4. For some reason i remember talking with someone in Omaha about a red conquest, I believe they had done a auto to manual conversion. Was this car an auto that was converted to manual?

How many miles on the car?

Engine work ever done? Rebuild? New head? Turbo?

    Thanks

yes, the previous owner did the auto to 5 speed conversion. about 76<000 miles, no balance shafts or jet valves, CNM cam (all this is what the previous owner told me) it has a 16g i'm going to switch with my black 87, unless i can sell both. Maybe i did speak with you before, as i mentioned the car has just been taking up space in my garage the past 2 years or so

  5. What kind of shape is the body in?

Do you know what is wrong with the power steering?

no belt, but i think the pump is actually bad. body is straight, somewhat sun faded. small amount of rust about driver side rear wheelwell. i have to borrow or buy a camera to put up some picks. couple of cracks on front airdam, but it is there

  6. i've got a '88 tsi thats been sitting in my garage for 2 years, red/blck int., sp lowering springs, fidanza flywheel, short throw shifter, ARE wheel w/good tires, CNM 3" exhaust; runs sluggish, i suspect either a warped manifold, i will include another one, or a bad TPS, i will include another one. power steering doesn't work. also, new clutch/brakes 2 years ago. $1000. Or, i will trade this & my 87 black tsi daily driver for a 944 porsche or 2nd gen 300zx. will take pics later, located in omaha, NE
  7. I got around to installing the BSEK kit, & did a jet valve elimination while i was at it. the information you guys gave me was invaluable, thanks so much. & now, the aftermath: good news, & not so good. the noise is gone, that appears to have been the source of it; oil pressure is very high, that was another of my worries; a slight antifreeze leak, i'm hoping it is just a clamp i have to retighten, i have not yet located it; but upon driving the car, it backfires like a mother! it keeps blowing off intercooler hoses, & will not stay running. I tried to be meticulous upon re-assembly, but something is not right. suggestions? thanks again guys
  8. i have this rattling in my drivetrain which i believe to be a balance shaft going out; i have the kit, which contains very, very basic instructions, 1 sheet; after looking at my car, i did show it to a foreign car mechanic in town, who suggested i "just drive it until it blows" (he was serious)! mechanic wise on a scale of 1 to 5, i give myself a solid 3, i did a head gasket replacement with little difficulty years ago on a previous conquest, so my question; can the engine even stay in the car? Any special tools needed? sorry so wordy, it just looks a little intimidating, thanks for any replies
  9. Rather than have to post twice and not knowing if that motor have shafts or not and knowing what they sound like...

Lifters come and go if they are dirty and you have to clean them.

if the pickup tube is sucking air from the last guy and he did a bsek

I can't post 50 answers but if a noise is heard on a motor you know nothing about I think a warning about shafts is a good thing so they don't ignore the noise as a valve train noise and keep driving because you know what happens

Shaft bearings that are going out only rattle at higher rpms, the more worn they are the lower the rpms they start to rattle. When they bang around in the sloppy bearing then they are thrown to the outer side because the shaft has a heavy side and it will follow along the outside and they don't make noise when they do that so it seems to stop. They are quiet, hit a certain rpms and rattle, rpms increase then they are quiet again.

I didn't say the head had cracks started in it but they are if that's a stock head or how the block is low in the middle and the chain guides are hard as a rock and pieces are chipping off and get pumped through the motor or valve seals need replaced and his separator is plugged up and his PCV valve needs checked or that he has the wrong spark plugs and that's just the beginning.

just trying to save a motor so someone doesn't ignore noises and keep on beating on the car

the motor does still have the balance shafts. i will search for a post on how to do the bsek, & thank you for the responses

  10. hi, i couldn't find a topic like this when i searched. my '87 tsi has a brief rattle sound i believe from under the valve cover when i hit approx. 3000 rpm, for a second, then disappears. it will do this every time, rattle for a second or two, than disappear. i don't think its a bearing, because it is not constant. i looked under the valve cover, nothing appears loose or out of order. it still has the jet valves. sticky lifter perhaps? i appreciate any input, thanks
  11. thanks soooo much for this i just emailed em about the yellow one its like 3 hours from me and i want a yellow one baddddddddddddddddddd
