  1. Well I am certainly not putting about $4000 into getting more air and fuel into and out of this car for only 300HP. :)

I often question my motivation and keep asking myself why I am dumping money into the engine of this car. I am yet to answer myself because I am hoping the question goes away as ignorance is bliss! :)

  2. I'm pretty sure someone here sells stock wiring harness if your is too hacked up.

Depending on what you plan on doing to the car you may want to ditch that harness all together and use one that comes with the new ECU you go with.

  3. I'm currently converting to MPI along with a new Marnel Head and AU CAM and my next step is the exhaust side.

I am not looking to drag strip the car and I am not participating in the testosterone filled HP and quarter mile comparison competition but would probably run it at 12-15psi.

For planning purposes which turbo would be best to go with for this kind of setup, if any?

Some say T3/T4, others say go straight T4. Then there are so many AR sizes and combinations to think about along with the brand/quality. (UGH!)

I'm assuming either route would also require a manifold change so would I need to have it custom built? If so, is there a recommendation on who to use for that?

  4. "Simple cheap" things you can do is update your exhaust system from the turbo to the end. 3" exhaust is about $400.

Updating to hardpipes and better Intercooler can be done for about $250, adding on a manual boost contoller is about $50.

Going MPI is expensive, if you can even get the intake to begin with. But certainly worth it in the long run.

In a nutshell, the more air and fuel you can get in and then out of the system the more HP you can produce.

Keep in mind though these cars are old and what was good HP back then is nothing now. Stock 87 cars produced about 177 HP while the 88 and 89's produced about 188 because of better intake flow and fuel management. My stock 08 accord produces more than that. Surely HP numbers dont tell the whole story, but you get the idea.

  5. You can get in touch with Scott87. I got a FIP and harness from a member here with a Magna setup I purchased and just got it back from Scott today as he did upgrades and harness work on it.

He is very knowledgeable about these and is the only one that updates them so any questions you have about it he can certainly answer.

Just food for thought, but I am pretty sure you can use this to run the stock system and then have it on hand for when you want to upgrade in the future.

  6. 245's on the rears is pushing it. They bubble over a little and are a little tuff for the tech to put on. If you go 255, I think it would look bad. I personally didnt care much for the look of the 245's on the 8's rear. To maintain stock diameter 245/45/16 is what you need.

Fronts are the same with the 225's, but not quite as bad. They also play with the feel of the road as they are wider and grip more.

Personally, when I get to restore the body and exterior of my car I will be putting on 8"x19" and 10"x19" and running 215 up front and 285 on the rears (wider if clearance allows in back). Unless someone convinces me otherwise that the handling would be too bad.

  7. These cars are not investments and anyone that thinks they are or that they can recoup their cost is distorted. These cars are restored by people that love them that want to do something with their cash other than burn it, it is that plain and simple. :)

I personally had someone hand me $5k for my car to help convince me to sell, we took it for a test drive and when we got back to my driveway I handed him his money back and told him I'm not selling it. Shortly after I garaged it for over 10 years. I did that because I love the car, not because $5k wasnt more than enough.

Extremely nice inside and out low mile quest may fetch $16k.

This may be a tough sell for you and I wish you the best of luck. However, if you do end up parting it out let me know.

I am in St. Louis as well and there are some things on there I would like.

I thought I was the last one in the area with one being I havent seen one in probably 4-6 years. :)

  8. I was looking at my intakes yesterday to see what you were speaking of Venable. The larger port running to the stock intake fuel mixer is there, but blocked off a few inches from where it meets the head. The small port is not even there but I can see the circle from a previous head gasket. I was under the assumption those are coolant ports on the stock intake, not fuel related. Or are you saying the are fuel related on the Magna?

No matter, HOT coolant is actually routed through the intake (both stock and MPI) which is going to be doing quite a heat up on it's own. This would probably be much more effective if you didnt have 200+ degree coolant freely flowing past the gasket already to heat the intake/air up.

  9. I bealive some OEM ones use the A/C to cool them. And they get more power even tho they run the a/c all lthe time. As at WOT it shuts off.

Ice water is for wimps LOL use coolent and dry ice!!! LOL

Not sure how that would work out in a closed system or with coolent but have you ever put dry ice in a 2 liter bottle and then added a little water before tightly sealing the cap?

Doing so and putting it in a sewer with a half filled 55gallon trash can on top of the 50lb lid resulting in both being blown about 10ft in the air after about 10mins of pressure build up in that bottle. That and the neighbor called the cops after hearing a huge "explosion".

  10. I was reviewing my 87 service manual last night and saw there are many things listed on the ECU that the FIP is going to be taking control of (to my knowledge). I assume I can get rid of those from the stock location to clean up my engine bay.

Not wanting to make assumptions: what stock components and/or "systems" can be removed that wont be done automagically as I physically remove the stock intake and put on the MPI intake? I would list a few I think need to be, but I am at work now and dont recall (in addition to clueless) what all they were but I believe EGR was one of them.

I am currently gathering the below items to upgrade this all at once:

Hardpipes with Upgraded Intercooler (not decided on the 4" one offered, going to a cxracing one, or using a water/air system)

FPR along with all the lines and connectors

    O2 Sensor and AFR meter

Having FIP upgraded for injection control and such (by Scott87)

    New Marnel Head (from Dad)

    3" Exhaust (from Kelly)

I expect to get all this up and running and then eventually upgrading the turbo and exhaust manifold next. My MPI project will not wait for these 2 updates.

I also saw things that the ECU does control but I want to keep: A/C is one of those things. How are these things accommodated for?

    Thanks!

  11. talked to this guy for a hour or so on the phone hes selling it for a engineer for chrysler thats 60 some years old and owned it since new

Did it sound like english was his first language? In my quest to get my 16 year old a car I spoke with many people that were selling cars for X person. Many were curb-stoning and all the others were scamming and not a single one had english as their first language.

You guys are some critical haters. :) Though I laugh at the asking price and think the dude in on crack when it comes to that, beyond that you cant tell crap about the shape of the car from the pictures. It is dirty and could be absolutely flawless beyond that, as it appears to be from what I saw. 2nd, I highly question how long the car has been sitting based on some physical evidence from the pictures and I doubt it has been sitting there for more than a couple years, if that.

So as far as reconditioning it goes, you simply can't assume anything. The biggest single expense I had after having my car garaged for 10 years was replacing the tires because they developed flat spots. Next would be the brakes being that they bound up. But beyond those I paid a lot of money to have things looked at that ended up being perfectly fine (fuel system included). The only thing I had to replace in the fuel system were the filters, all other things were fine after a little cleaning. Not that I wouldnt have those same things checked again for a car, but after inspecting it and checking the fuel system it would be on a determined need instead of a blanket list as it was before.

You would hope for the price he's asking he at least had it looked over. But considering he wasnt even smart enough to wash it first, you never know. I guess having pictures of it dirty in a barn was suppose to up the value some how.
