overdrive issues

Overdrive often "dies" from a bad temp sensor on the engine. Overdrive is disabled until the engine warms up a bit... this temp sensor completes a ground to allow overdrive to work. When the sensor starts going bad, it gets a fair bit of resistance - often what folks experience is overdrive going in-and-out in sync with the turn signals as the turn signals affect the battery voltage slightly.

Look near the engine thermostat for a small temp sensor with a yellow+green wire going to it. Unplug that wire and ground the wire... if overdrive works, you've proven the sensor is junk. For giggles: grab the connector "prong" of the sensor and try twisting it gently... on dying sensors the guts of the sensor disintegrate and the tang will turn easily.

As a temp workaround, you can leave that jumper grounded. Just use the switch on the shift lever to disable overdrive until the dash temp gauge moves past the first "normal" tick mark. Unplugging the overdrive relay also works: it's by the "dead pedal" where your left foot sits; look for a large 8-pin relay on the end of the electrical panel you'll see under the dash on the left side of the car.
