HERLOSS
Has anyone been able to make the fog lights come on without turning the headlights on? Below is an exact copy from another web site. I've tried it, but you can't turn the fog lights off! > How to Make the Fog lights Work without the Headlights on First you have to find the relay for the fog lights. It’s mounted on the passenger side fender up next to the airbox. There should be 3 little "canisters" with wires coming out of them. The fog light relay is the one mounted by itself underneath the other two. It will have 4 wires coming out of it: red, red/white, green, and red/green. Unwrap the black insulator and cut both the red & green wires about 1 inch from the connector. Tape the green wire off and fold it back out of the way. (it’s the one that tells the relay when the headlights are on) Use a connector and connect the red wire to the two wires running into the relay. (Red is the hot lead) This wires the fog light directly to a battery power source so don’t forget to turn them off...
indy_85stariones
From my notes.... ADI2UDE Percise FogLight Mod instructions * « on: 03/07/03 at 10:17:21 » Report this post to moderator(s) Quote Modify This mod is for 86-89's I'm not sure if the wiring is the same on earlier models. It allows the use of your foglights with parking lights ONLY, you no longer have to have the head lights on in order to have your fog lights I know there are people that would like to do this and can't for one reason or another. The ONLY reason this should not work on 86-89 LE, ES, TSi, or ESi-R's is because someoen previously dorked with your wiring. 1. Gather the necassary tools. Philips head screw driver, wire crimper, electrical tape aka black tape, and a small 10-12 " peice of stranded wire. Since you are using this only as a signal wire to the relay it can be a pretty small wire. 2. Locate the foglight relay; it is located on the passenger side of the car in front of the air can right underneth the horn and two other relays. I found it MUCH easier when I removed the turbo to i/c pipe. 3. Locate the 10 gauge green wire. Cut the wire where it enters the harness to the rest of the car. This should leave you with lotsa wire to work with. Second, strip abotu 1/2" back on the wire or a little less depends on how you plan on attaching the upcoming wire. 4. Pull the passenger side marker light out. This requires a phillips head screwdriver to remove two screws. One on the marker light itself and one in the far bottom (pass side) corner. Pull the light out. To make it a bit eaiser you can actually pull the light out of the marker housing. There are two wires here. A green/white and a black. 5. Pulling the light out enough to reach the wires easily. Take the G/W wire and you can do several different things. I myself carefully cut a ring in the sheath, and pulled back the insulation on each side. Thsi exposed abotu 1/4"-1/2" of wire that was unmolested. Take the peice of stranded wire strip about 1/2" and wrap it around the bare wire you just exposed on the G/W wire. Tape the splice you just made. (You can also solder it to make it a better connection. Also you can cut the wire strip both ends of the G/W wire and tie it all together with a wire nut or somethign. IMHO The way I did it didn't take very long Was easier to do to then fighting with gettign the stripper in far enough to strip the back wire. 6. Run the peice of wire you just tapped into the G/W wire through two hole on the inside of the fender. 7. splice the wire you just ran through the fender to the green wire that you stripped. Make a nice secure connection tape it. 8. Install the lights and grill back into place. Watch in amazement. Looks GREAT!!!!!!!!

88_ESI_R
All of a sudden my fog lights work all by them-selves when they are turned on and the car is running. I've always left the fog light switch on so when I turn my headlights on, they come on automatically. But now they come on when I start the vehicle. The car has to be actually running for it to happen though ???.
JustPaus_88TSi
Haha, I remember when my foglights would turn on and the headlights would pop-up... This was without the key in it. I was standing next to my car, talking to my friend and the headlights pop-up, the fogs turn on. I'd have to turn the car on, then turn the lights off. Another 10 minutes later it would do this all over again. Did it for like two weeks, I had to disconnect the battery every night. Hasn't done it for close to a year now. emann420
john justpaus_88tsi Just like Christine huh. Sometimes you have to wonder what is actually happening. My windshield wipers turn on by themselves when the car is wet.. Obviously a short in the relay or the wiring but handy nonetheless. E
