mustang wheels and 305-315's?

OK, I have seen people running 315/35/17's on mustang wheels, everyone says they used spacers and/or they rolled fenders etc... but no one has posted exactly what setup they are running to fit 315's. I seen a couple in the SQC official wheel thread but again, no real details there.

 

SO, anyone running mustang wheels (17x10.5) 305-315/35/17 tires, what size spacer are you running and did you roll your fenders? I am getting ready to buy new wheels/tires and want to know the specifics before I spend $1k on tires. Thanks in advance guys!

I had 315/35 Sumis on 17x10.5" +27 Cobras, with a 30mm adapter. Everything cleared fine at stock height and lowered 3", with very slight camber increase (bent strut casings). I did roll my fender lips, however the tire looked as though it would have cleared the stock lip location. Edited by Dave-O

I'm running 18" BOSS 338's 8" N 9.5". mustang specs. JDWHEELS.COM has the size info. or my gallery. no spacers. need minor lip roll, haven't rolled mine. Yoko 225 40 N 265 35 S-Drives. looks great, could go bigger but i DD the car, C300

Is the below information correct for stock 87-89 wheels?

 

5x114.3 bolt

-10 offset

 

Standard 87-89

7" front 205/55/16

8" rear 225/50/16

 

SHP 88-89

8" front 225/50/16

9" rear 245/45/16

 

How big of a rim can we get under the fenders without having to make modifications (fender roll or suspension clearance)?

305 and 315's require a rim that is between 10.5-12.5" wide

285 and 295's require a rim that is between 10-11.5" wide

 

Personally I would leave the fronts at 205 or 225 as wider tires up there are going to effect stearing and drivability more than they are going to contribute to help traction. However, on the rear the more rubber you can put on the road the better.

 

Going big is also going to require that you either make them very short sidewall tires or adjust the spedometer. 315/25/18 causes the car to be 2% fast and 305/30/18 causes it to be 2.1% slow. 285 and 295/30/18's or 285 and 295/35/17's get that much closer to even.

 

The 315/35z/17's you have above will run the car about 4% slow (you will be doing 57.6 when you think you are doing 60) and need a rim between 10.5 and 12.5" wide. Tire will probably bubble over 10.5.

You'll have MAJOR understeer if you like cornering hard then. As the widths of the tires front/rear get closer, the handling of the car will become more neutral.

Do you think it could work with a 10" rim, and what should i do with the stock struts, change to an aftermarket coilover of somekind

I certainly would not be the one to ask. I had questions of my own I was hoping would be answered. :-)

 

I am simply providing you the math that 1010tires.com kicks out when you calculate it. I believe from other post here our cars can handle a 10" rim but it depends on the offset you use. I dont understand the whole offset thing, I guess I should look it up, but 315 tires I believe need an 11" rim, you may be able to get by with 10" but the tire will stick out so far from the rim it would probably look "off" if it did work. I believe a 315 has a tread size that spans 12" - 12.4".

 

For you to be close diameter wise you would need 315/30/17's. This would bring the diameter size of the tire closer to stock and thus you dont have the speedometer issues.

An 11" wide wheel at zero offset would physically clear the fender, at the strut's expense. A thinner strut or coilovers would alleviate the issue. I'm sure with a little creative massaging an 11.5" or even a 12" wheel would fit, but again the strut is the deciding factor.

 

Typically, with tire sizes, you can add or subtract an inch of tread diameter in comparison to the wheel and safely run the combination. Typically a tire is narrower than the tread width indicates. Case in point, the 315/35HR17 Sumitomos I had on my 10.5" wide Cobra wheels actually measured 11.9 inches in width, even though 315mm roughly converts to 12.4".

Thanks dave, was thinking about getting a set of D2's to help the clearance issue, but cant decide on what rims to get. I really like the factory style rim for these cars.
