exhaust fumes

Sounds like you may have a exhaust leak, most likely in the engine compartment. When engine RPMs are higher your pushing more air out of the engine, through the exhaust pipe. This raises the pressure and any leaks in the system become worse. If this is the case its most likely in the engine compartment as it can come through the firewall into the interior from the engine bay. Other leaks will tend to get blown away and not enter the interior if I remember right. Look for black carbon buildup around the joints of the system, and the components near them. Also if you have someone that can help you, block the tires, start the car and have them hold down the brake. Then have them press on the gas lightly to put a load on the engine. You can then place your hand near the joints and feel for exhaust being pushed out of the joints. BE CAREFUL if you do this and make sure your out of the way of the car in case it moves. If you feel any warm air being pushed out you need to fix that leak.

Do you have a blow-off valve added? If so, that's probably the source. With a BOV, you'll get an over-rich air:fuel mix when the BOV opens because the StarQuest ECU doesn't "know" some air is being dumped overboard... it assumes that 100% of the air measured by the airflow sensor gets into the cylinders so it computes fuel to match ==> and ends up dumping too much fuel.

Also, a bad idle/nose switch will lead to over-rich air:fuel ratios while lifting off after acceleration... this can stink too. The FAQ has details on adjusting the ISC/MPS in the idle adjustment processes; read those and you'll see references to this switch and the wire it feeds. Stick an ohmmeter on that wire (and to ground) to check the switch.

Look at the heat shields around the turbo. Any black soot buildups? If so ==> exhaust leaks.
