flatty86
Hey Guys, I need your help...I bought a 86 conquest flatty 4 mos. ago not running. The guy I bought the car from said it was the fuel pump. After changing the fuel pump, went to crank the car and all it does is turn over... Also I didn't hear the new fuel pump which mean there is now power getting back there. So anyway I took off the connection from the back and tested the black and orange wire with a test light. No power getting back there. So my question is this, how do I locate the power source? I didn't see a fuse for the fuel pump either...Any help would be gladly appreciated, because I want to drive my car.
Scotty Dont
The last person to ever trust is someone selling you something. That being said there is a test port for the fuel pump on the passenger side by the air filter. The ecu sends power to the ecu and it happens only while cranking and running. Check out Starquestgarage.com only the 1988 manual work but lots of stuff is the same. Also http://starquest.i-x.net/viewforum.php?f=

MikeMeyerhoff
The main control relay is near the passengers right foot ( on the side of the car above the ECU). Its a somewhat common part to fail and a pain in the butt to get to. You can power the fuel pump using the test port scotty mentioned and a bit of spare wire. If the car starts with the testing wire in place it is likely the control relay. If it still doesn't start with the fuel pump forced on, it could be the ignitor (which is a very common failure). The fuel pump will only run when the motor is turning (safety feature) and that is accomplished using the ignitor. flatty86
new question.......Ive been driving the car with the new fuel pump and its been running fine.. now I notice after driving the car a few miles it tries to stall...Another thing that I noticed it that the fuel pump is really loud.... I don't get it... its a brand new fuel pump.... Is there anything else I need to look into? then when I turn the car off for a few minutes and turn it back on its fine, and then it happens again. MikeMeyerhoff
when you were working on the fuel pump, did you check the in tank screen or the filter trap before the pump, or the condition of the tank itself? It might be starving for fuel if the intake stuff before the pump is plugging up.
flatty86
Yeah I replaced everything except this..... and this part could be the problem...while running I can feel air coming out of the top of this filer when I put my hand over it.. Is this part that's in front of the fuel pump a filter? Please see below: http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o66/kaw228/397550_10152394302085538_729664934_n_zps437e3e26.jpg http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o66/kaw228/543900_10152394301945538_1833123307_n_zps983ce278.jpg
flatty86
I may have gotten hold of a bad fuel pump as well... Why would the fuel pump be making a loud buzzing sound after driving the car for a while? Edited January 20, 2013 by flatty86
