WHich loctite do you use on freeze plugs?
-
So I ve been putting off trying to get my 87 back on the road, but have some time now. Was trying to replace valve stem seals, but having some troubles knowing how to properly install the valve stem seals. I tries to use the old one, but it looks like I messed up and lightly gouged the top of the first seal. I was looking for the correct stem seal install tool and how far or how much to use it to tap it down, It seems to be an interference fit but I'm not sure from the description i the factory service manual if it is supposed to be a t a certain height or all the way down. Thanks in advance.

Hi all, just trying to get my starion back on the road. I've seen pics on the internet of installing the block first without the head. Is this so you can use the engine hoist properly or can you install the head with the intake and exhaust manifolds on the block and then install the engine as an assembly. Thanks in advance.

patra- it actually broke the arm that actuated the jet valve...i dont know why... the freeze plugs were leaking down the block, for awhile cuz there is crud all over the outside of the engine... was thinking to clean it up and replace the freeze plugs... -
My original motor had 144,000 miles before the turbo oil seal went out and the car was spewing out smoke out the exhaust, but it wasn't overheating and was running relatively ok. I thought I was gonna rebuild the engine after I acquired a spare engine, but it seems both engines aren't going anywhere and I want to at least drive the car every so often and use the garage. From what I can see after taking apart most of the engine, was a couple leaking freeze plugs, 1 broken jet valve, and the turbo seal. Does anyone think that if I replace those things or eliminate the jet valves and replace the other things, the car would last till i can get the other engine done? I would totally rebuild it if I had the extra cash. Any helpful tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

do u possibly have a number for that carquest gasket, I am in california and i think that would be NAPA parts here, but not sure.. also thanks fro the info on prepping the pan..=)
-
cool thanks, i think it is .5, so i think it is 20 over because the pistons look bigger than my stock pistons...so there is two felpro, cork and paper? i know ive seen that before on other gaskets, but usually it is rubber or cork... and if i do use the paper one, i don't need any sealnt , correct? thanks again

so there would be coolant in the head that would drain into the oil pan, when the head is removed? i think i got the engine with the head removed, that why i dont recall any coolant draining. I wil check my stock motor and see if it has the same issue becuase i removed that head. Thanks which oil pan gasket is the best for these engines? I have the ajusa head gasket kit still in the package, hopefully it hasnt dried up.. also, my stock motor has the chassis VIN number on the block, where it says G54, this engine has a different looking number, does anyone know how to tell if it is a remanufactured block ? thansk again in advance

I'm still checking my options, but so far the engine top surface seems ok, no cracks that i can see....last time i checked it seems flat, gotta put a straight edge on it to confirm... numbers on pistons are .5 on each one.. and the head had manual adjusters on it..
-
where should i look for cracks? around the cylinder bores? the walls don't look scarred but i will take another look.. thanks again in advance.. i will check the other things as well

Hi I have a second 2.6 block i bought used that seems to have oversized pistons (has like numbers on top of the pistons)in it already.. there is a little bit of carbon on the top of the pistons and what seems to be surface rust on the lower part of the cylinders. The engine turns freely but i drained the oil and found what looks like coolant in it. It doesn't look like milky, just mixed in. I suspect the head gasket leaked, but not totally sure.. The head has this greyish crusty stuff on it and it has manual adjusters on it. The question is, I want to use this as a temporary engine till i can get my stock engine rebuilt and drive the car in the process... Is there a quick way to check the usability of the engine without spending too much money and make sure it won't die right after i put it together?? It doesn't have the stock VIN like my original, it seems like a rebuild from an engine reseller.. Sorry for so long of a post, just want to drive the car again=) thanks in advance
