1930s? South Bend lathe 9 x36 restoration

08 July 2019 - 08:40 PM

I bought this old lathe a little while back. According to the owner it sat for over 30 years in this old barn in Northwest Michigan where l picked it up. Also came with 2 4 jaw chucks and a small 3 jaw  along w old school lantern tool post and original carbide tool holders. It took a while but l was able to nicely take all the paint off with my ultrasonic cleaner. Some Tractor Supply  Ferguson gray paint  re wick for the spindle oilers and roller bearing upgrade. Also made special plate for the motor wheel and bridge to sit on along w modern belt.Easy belt pulley speed change w simple pull of the handle(handle from old craftsman mower)lol Also weight of the plate and motor in rear is a tensioner. It cuts and holds tolerances like a champ.
Some pics to enjoy for you gearheads.

2 awesome barn finds

12 May 2019 - 08:12 PM

I ended up taking a trip in northwest Michigan area this weekend. Just kind of cruising around looking at garage sale signs and things parked in people's front yards w for sale signs.Couple of VW beattles and some dune buggies later l spotted this red barn w a simple sign that said barn sale tools and more.  Go Dra check it out!!! Well this place was right down my alley. Found me a very nice 1920s South Bend lathe w all the tools 3 chucks and all and very excited. Being all in a moment of finding this lathe l almost stopped looking for anything else. Figure l better slow down look some more.  All of a sudden l look in between some vertical stacked plywood and a window  and there it is   o man what is under that tarp? I said to the lady in charge of the sale. She said politely w southern accent. There is on old orange motorcycle under there and been there for 20+ years. Man my jaws dropped  when l lifted that cover. It is a 1974 Honda cb550 super sport w caffe racer handle bars and yes orange color. They made these things from 74-78. I am thinking ok I will pay 3000-4000 for this thing for sure. She politely said  if you want it you can have it for $250 . Deal l said and she disappeared for 10 min or so to get the title.
Some restoration will be needed but both finds are complete and motors turn free.
