  2. By high amp I assume you mean something other than the stock alt... might be a short somewhere, or else your car is just an a**hole like mine
  3. I put in an alpine single compartment unit with a spare din underneath it. It looks great, sounds better. http://www.starquestclub.com/index.pl?boar...;num=1039463891 The pictures show the head in an angled position; it usually lies flat against the dash.
  4. The box I put in my car was only 13.5x13.5x7.5 and hasn't had any problems running my 12". I haven't noticed any problems with the alternator either...the same amp used to dim all of my lights in my 92 camry, but the voltometer never even wavers, even with the hardest bass hits. I recommend getting one sub with a good amp, somewhere around 400-600 watts RMS. And no no no on the solo barics (square kickers). Overpriced, overpowering, and will do nothing more than shake your car loose so it sounds worse. It's all about quality with the entire system, not just thumping bass and crappy mids and highs. I mostly listen to rock music, and this set up is pretty much perfect. I just wish I could turn down the sub a little more from the head unit itself rather than turn it up... a few songs just have too much, but...meh.. http://www.starquestclub.com/index.pl?boar...;num=1039463891 chris
  5. I just did a quick calculation on those gullwing starions...in USD that looks like about $20,000 (back in the eighties!)... hope you know what you're doing or have some really good friends in the business ;D
  6. Never mind, it was all a matter of taking out the glove box. It's the little things...
  7. So how does one get to the screw in the very back of the controller? There just doesn't seem to be any easy way to get that last screw out to remove the entire head unit... any hints? chris
  8. I just had the guys at Ovation get all my install taken care of this past weekend, ended up putting in: JLaudio Evolution TR 5.25" Coaxial in the doors (50 watts rms) JLaudio Evolution TR 6" Coaxial in the hatch (50 watts rms) Alpine CDA-7897 MP3/CD Player Alpine CHA-S624 6-disc changer Orion XTR-Pro 12" Subwoofer (1000 watts max) Planetaudio 600 watt rms amp Dynamat in both doors http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00001.jpg Alpine head unit and replacement din compartment http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00002.jpg Side view of head unit http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00003.jpg Head unit with car power off http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00004.jpg Amp and six disc changer (going to move the six disc) http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00005.jpg Subwoofer (going to go where 6 disc is now, with some carpet on the box of course). Box is 13.5x13.5x7.5, just about 1 cub. foot. http://home.insightbb.com/~chris.reid/DSC00006.jpg Just a shot of one of the rear speakers
  9. The stock speakers are 4" in the front and 5.25" in the back. But, I think that most aftermarket 4's and 5.25's won't fit, because the install people ended up putting 5.25" in the front and 6" in the back, which I'm not complaining about. (sound nice!)
  10. Just went out and blew some money last week; here's my attempt: JLaudio Evolution TR 4" Coaxial in the doors (35 watts rms) JLaudio Evolution TR 5.25" Coaxial in the hatch (50 watts rms) Alpine CDA-7897 MP3 CD Player http://ecominet2.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/i...0&p_main=10 Alpine CHA-S634 MP3-cd compatible 6-disc changer Orion XTR-Pro 12" Subwoofer (1000 watts max) Planetaudio 600 watt rms, 1000 watt max amp Dynamat all over the place, and a professional install this Saturday... I guess I'll save up for those components eventually, but this should tide me over for the next few months. I'll put up some pictures when I get it all put in, too.
  11. I'm having the same problem with my Orion XTR-Pro 12" sub, I only bought one knowing how small the hatch was (I hadn't gotten the car drivable at that point), so I built a box I hoped would fit quite nicely...problem is, it's spl for that sub, which is something like 2 cubic feet (big big big in that hatch.) So, I'm going to try to build a box to the tune of 14"x14"x8", which should take up just enough room to leave some space for my amp, 6-disc, and some storage space for at least some small bags and stuff. I think we would all be wise to just stick to 8" subs and put them in like ESIrType? has in his car, he's got all sorts of space back there. I just wish I'd seen your picture before I bought all my equipment...What are the dimensions on those boxes anyways? Those Solo baric's are nice subs, but they just require too much power... I had a 15" L7 for a while, and while it sounded great, the amp was just way too expensive. I had to buy a 1600 watt amp to get the full potential out of it, which is a shame because you can get the same volume out of 5 Sony XPlode subs with a single 300 watt amp...not quite as clean though :-/
  12. Looks good...I'll get you a pic of mine after the install this weekend. Are you going to do anything with the carpet overlap?
  13. 100 watts running two subs...sounds kind of lo-fi....I would recommend putting some nice 4" 2 way speakers in the front, two 5.25" speakers in the hatch, and a nice 1000 watt subwoofer...a nice head unit and you'd be set!
