is this a bad idea for a weekend driver???
Burton replied to importwarrior's topic in Just plain ol' B.S.
Yeah, might want to check local laws... some places don't allow fuel cells on street cars. Would definitely cut down on weight, but would be bringing the lesser weight up higher, which would change the center of gravity a bit, but probably not enough to even notice the difference. Would definitely make for easier servicing. -
If it was 90-91, I'd think about it a little bit, but the 92-94's are about the ugliest DSMs ever made IMO. You made the right choice.

Be Honest how many of you yankee's have cabin fever :)
Burton replied to Shelby's topic in Just plain ol' B.S.
I'm not even up north and I got cabin fever. I'm in the house all day every day, except for when the wife watches the baby and lets me get out to the shop or run to the store. She's 8 months pregnant with #2, so I'm stuck doing more baby watching and less shop playing. -
I just assumed that's why he needed a pic? Give the pic to the tattoo guy and have him trace the stencil from the pic. That's what most people do.

HA told you all the FRS BRZ was DOOMED to SUCK
Burton replied to jszucs's topic in Just plain ol' B.S.
Good for you... when I was in my early 20's and had some tickets on my record, I was paying just as much EVERY 6 MONTHS for full coverage on a 10 year old GTI. The cost difference may be negligible for you, but not the young, go-fast generation they market these cars too. That's my point... They market a car with higher insurance rates to a group of people who have the highest rates around, and may not be able to afford it. -
...2....3....4, get your booty on the floor. Everybody get up and get down.... Everybody get up and get down....

Yeah, but that doesn't change the fact that insurance companies charge more for 2 seaters. Call your insurance for a quote on a 93 300ZX coupe, then ask them how much for a 2+2. Coupe will be more... might be a little might be a lot. My insurance company wants 1/3 more for the coupe. -
Those are his roller wheels. The blue on those wheels were done by Nick and on the car when it came here. The actual wheels that will be going on the car are still in my shop, have been stripped of all clear, the raised surfaces of the spokes and the lips have been dry sanded up to 400, and I'll be starting in on the wetsanding grits and veggie oil... 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, this weekend. Then, they will be highly polished. Nick wanted me to clear them when I get them done, but I talked him out of that, since the clear will discolor over time, and diminishes the polished effect. He was going to wait til the wheels were done before coming to get everything, but I found some re-work issues on the car that needed to be handled, and he needs the car to get his stuff done. Now that he has the car, I'll get the wheels finished and bring them to him when they're done.

See, where there's a will, there's a way!

Ahhhhh. I'm going thru that myself with my Benz.... 3rd brakelight uses a Benz only bulb for the bulb monitoring system. I wanted to swap in something else, maybe a 194 bulb and socket, but the bulb monitoring light on the dash would stay on all the time. Instead I had to buy a $10 brake light bulb
-
Well, I can't help with the metric readings, but if you want to eliminate the backup light from acting as a fog, just cut the + wire to that bulb, and run a jumper from the + lead on the other backup light.... both backup lights will still work when you back up, but the one won't come on with the fogs.

Looking good! I've been eyeing my D2s but gotta get your wheels done first before I can play with my own toys LOL. You really should have hit that wheelwell with a little bit of undercoating or truck bedliner while that strut was out.... would save you from having to tape all that stuff up when you do it later. If I didn't retint that back window Sunday I would have gotten it on there myself

Anybody can swap euro spec stuff into their car, but it won't retain DOT standards. That said, you could probably get away with it just fine. I've seen a lot of lighting mods... people swapping in parts from other markets, tinting, complete headlight system swaps from other cars, the list goes on and on. The only times I've ever seen cops do anything about it, was when there was tint involved, or if someone tried to mount headlights too low on the bumper.

This/\ My Benz S420 has rear fogs. They aren't bright enough to blind anyone behind you... just like having a brake light on all the time. Truth be told, even front fogs shouldn't blind anyone... A fog light disperses light over a large area, not condensed like a headlight beam or driving light beam. The driving lights are what you have to worry about blinding people.

Well, not sure how the toolroom works in Cali, but at the shops I was at, the toolroom guys were the lazy ones who wanted to sit around and collect a check. I was on the floor, in the thick of it, making chips on my mills or spotting and assembling molds. I was even lead machinist for a few years. I wish I had pics of all the stuff I worked on, but we had clauses that anyone using a personal camera in the shop would be immediately fired. We had military stuff there, as well as lots of prototype stuff. We made all the molds for every plastic part in the interior of the Ford GT. We had a full interior mockup on site before there were even any spy photos of the car. Also helped build the 2nd gen Viper hood mold. We did a little aerospace stuff, but mostly automotive.

I am not a headlight designer, nor do I work for the DOT, so I really don't know, other than I believe the headlight "assemblies" count just like the old sealed beams. I do know this... With the amount of paperwork and hoops that manufacturers have to go thru to be legit with DOT standards for any new car or any design change for that matter, I can assure you that they would not produce anything that was not DOT legal. You can nitpick the wording of the laws all you want, but in the end, this Prius would have never made it to the showroom with lights that did not meet DOT laws. All those parts were signed off on years ago when they were designed.

It has 2 headlamps... one on each side.

I could only find the door panels. The driver's side is good. The passenger side one is the one with the tear, and even then, it's just on the insert behind the door handle, and since that piece can be taken out, I was going to swap them for black ones if I ever used them. There's a pic in the first post here.... http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=131122&hl=burton#entry1286115

I'll look later when I get out to the shop. I know I have buckskin door panels, but I remember one of them had a small tear in the vinyl, but not sure which side. I also have some other buckskin hardware... maybe I have the rest of the stuff too

Man, Buc-ee's has some lights, don't they? I'm glad I don't pay their electric bill! Glad you like it, and I'm sure it feels good to have it in your own garage. I'm glad to free up some space, but I must admit, when I was out in the shop after you left, it felt like something was missing LOL. Once the wheels are done and that thing's on D2's, it's gonna be sick!
-
It's all about what brand paint you use. I have a supplier I can get a Viper Red from for $150 for a gallon... If I got it in a more expensive brand I could pay as much as $450 for a gallon.

GM has already said that they will do the repairs/restorations on all 8 cars.

How much do new tan floor mats in the unopened factory bag go for?
Burton replied to tsi_tom's topic in Just plain ol' B.S.
Looks like buckskin to me... I have a few buckskin pieces out in the parts loft if you need pics for comparison -
So much want!!!!!!! They look good on flatties, especially good with that front bumper and those wheels, but I don't think it would look right on a widebody. To each their own tho. Make your car how you want it!
