el_cachorro
hey there to everyone, i have several questions and looking if someone can give me your opinions and MOST accurate right answers: question # 1*WHATS the difference between the JET VALVE HEAD VS. NON JET VALVE HEAD, does it makes any difference getting a non jet valve head? 2*WHY getting a 3 ANGLE VALVE JOB head w/ the non jet valve, it makes a big difference as well? 3*Also i have a Mitsubishi Montero 1987 ALL WHEEL DRIVE and i don't believe it, when i bought it last night and this morning i open the hood i saw the 2.6liter Carburator(NON-TURBO), beautiful i have an spare block just in case if i crack my 1988 CONQUEST TSI engine block, and i'm not sure does anyone knows, that this montero year and everything, it comes with the NON JET VALVE CARB. HEAD, i'm sure i can use it and convert it to 3 angle valve job and put different camshaft much bigger? 4* Also this is very important if anyone knows about this, the montero 87 rear end it has the ratio = 4:10 I THINK but if it is thats amazing i can use that to put it in my other 88 conquest for drag racing ONLY , NOO...street at all. i'm sure it will fit. please let me know what you think? 5* Also if you guys know that the montero 87 it don't comes with the turbo, its a non turbo block, but it has the G54B Model engine and my conquest tsi 88 2.6 liter turbo model engine is G54B, so you know, 1+1=2 simple like that, its the same block, ok you guys follow me, ok my question is can I convert the 2.6 liter from the Montero 87 to Turbo, to fit my conquest tsi, but when i took the block out this morning i saw that the oil filter location it don't has the 3 lines i mean 2 lines goes for the intercooler i think and the other one goes for the turbo big time, to cool off the turbo otherwise it will run hot and it will blow, you know, i mean you see it all the time that 3 lines when you change your oil and oil filter from your CONQUEST AND STARION, but i will try to convert this block carb, to turbo, AND my other question is that it has been DONE BEFORE, i mean you guys saw it anywhere people convert their DOdge RAM or MIGHTY MAX MITSUBISHI, those it has the 2.6liter carb. but w/ no turbo, and if you guys know or saw anyone DONE IT BEFORE. if not, i will make history. when i put the turbo in this Montero 2.6 L. i will have to change only the Pistons thats all, and bigger Camshaft, convert it to 3 angle valve job head, port and polish as well, arp head studs, and convert it also into Fuel Injection, not multiport for now, in the future. you guys sure it listen this montero engine, very smooth, 87,000 miles only, i'm taking only the rear end and engine block w/ the head, the rest trash i call the junk yard to take the montero out. i only pay for the 87 montero $150. US DOLLARS. thats all. but of this question number 5 please let me know if someone has done it before, convert the 2.6Liter carb block to TURBO W/ fuel injection system. thanks for everything. please when you answer for any questions please put a same number from the question that you are about to answer thanks and have a good one. kev
1. Pretty simple, there are no jet valves. The jet valves are prone to sticking open and causing lean out conditions. Also the jet valve poses another material in the cylinder which expands/contracts at a different rate than the aluminum head. Thus it can cause more stress in the cylinder and can be a component of head cracking. The jet valves were primarily for emissions reasons and it has been shown that they do not increase/decrease hp in any way. So this is not a mod to increase hp, it is more of a proven way of making your engine a bit more reliable. 2. It will make a slight difference. This is a standard practice when rebuilding a head along with machining the valve seats. You probably won't feel an increase in hp in doing a 3 angle valve job but it does help if you have several other modifications. 3. Yes the non-jet valve heads from caravans, monteros, etc work excellent in conquests. You can run a bigger cam but the montero cam is the same grind as a quest. But the blocks are NOT the same!!! 4. The casings are different and ring diameter is different. This will not work in a quest. There is one certain montero with a 3.9:1 ratio that will work with a conquest but I'm not certain of the make and model (and if it is the front or rear ring/pinion that will work) 5. The non turbo block has a different oil pump but that isn't a big deal because the quest oil pump can just be bolted on. The biggest problem is that the non turbo block doesn't have the oil squirters that splash oil up under the pistons. To install these squirters requires machine work to the block. Do not run a turbo on a 2.6L block without the squirters. Sorry if I bring bad news on this one.
Sonypete
I'd have to disagrre about the piston oil squirters. I know its better to have them, bu tnot every turbo engine has these stock. There are many turbo engines that run allot of boost and power that don't even have these. Just like nitraded cranks its better to have but doens't make or break it unless you putting out huge and outrageous numbers.

There are many turbo engines that run allot of boost and power that don't even have these. Just like nitraded cranks its better to have but doens't make or break it unless you putting out huge and outrageous numbers. The oil squirters and nitrided crank help with two of a turbo engines worst ememies.Combustion temps and damage due to detonation. The oil squirters are there to help cool the pistons which in turn will help keep compustion temps a little lower. Cooler pistons also are not prone to preignition due to the lack of hot spots When you get detonation, it's like a hammer on the pistons, rods and utimately the crank. If the journal surface is soft, it will not retain it's shape when the detonation pulse reaches it and will flex. This flex will wear bearing much quicker. It's hard to compare different manufactures because of different material grades used. I have a feeling the caravan crank is a POS until nitrided. After Nitriding, it brings the surface quality up to acceptable levels.
shift1313
There is a 3.9 and a 4.11 ratio rear end that will fit but requires a spacer because of the different backlash. im not sure what years will work. I believe fuel injection specialties sells new mitsu gears with the spacers needed. If you are building a drag car i wouldnt use that block unless you are going to install the oil squirters. Ive done some checking and the cranks from the mightymax/montero is the same part number as the starquest so i guess its the same forged crank. That would be the only thing immediately useful. If that truck only has 87k on it why would you tear it apart for little to no parts then scrap it. I would sell it for $1000 and use that money to get fresh parts for your car. You can find a used block in good shape for under $200 im sure and you can buy a new ring/pinion set for a couple hundred. I wouldnt put almost 100k mile parts into a drag car, especially drive train parts. I say if you can sell it for $1000 you can get yourself a new non jet head, spare block and your ring/pin setup with spacers and you wont have to do any work to remove parts and you wont have to scrap a useable vehicle. just my two cents though
OBSESSIVE_ENT.
I HAD BOTH HEADS AND I PREFER THE NON JET VALVES SINCE WE ALL HAVE THE TEMP PROBLEM I USE VENTS AND CO2 SPRAY
Sonypete
Richie_Rich you speak complete truth. I was just saying how there beneficial not neccesary. I would have no doubt in building an engine that had no oil squirters. I wouldn't just throw out a block cause it didn't have oil squiters. If you had two blocks in front of me of course I would pick the oil squirted one, just would not limit myself cause of it.
el_cachorro
well, right now i'm thinking in keeping the carburator system and just add up a turbo system, you know put the turbo exhaust manifold, turbo, but i will no to go no more than 5 or 7 lbs. of boost, i guess its not going to give me no problem at all ,well, right now i'm thinking in keeping the carburator system and just add up a turbo system, you know put the turbo exhaust manifold, turbo, but i will no to go no more than 5 or 7 lbs. of boost, i guess its not going to give me no problem at all
el_cachorro
SHIFT1313 hey there, its that right that you were saying that the CrankShaft from Montero 87 its the same size for the Conquest and Starion TSI, it match the same size, because my Montero 87 its a 4wheel drive, but still i'm sure it match the same thing. i just want to confirm that's 100% right.... please let me know about it thanks....
