89onaquest
Last reply 3/17/04... Hmm looks dead to me. Especially when they were "half done" at that point... Not to say I would not like one... but 7 months only to get half done... or rather 7 months and nothing done.
Shawn_Silva
Sorry guys, my new daughter along with various other projects has kept me very busy at the shop lately. The aluminum bumper support is still a reality, only the interest appears not a priority at this time. To be completely honest the whole quest sales game has been rather lackluster the last year, so I'm concentrating on getting my car to the next stage and finishing off some other peoples projects currently. I think my concentration in the future of quest aftermarket parts will be GP related as tooling up for one off's is proving to be more hassle than anticipated. Appreciate all the buisness the community has generated over the years, you are a great bunch of people. Take care Shawn
artinist
if anyone want to tackle this job on their own, you can start off with a bumper from any old saturn. they have nice aluminum supports which you should be able to get for about $10 from the junkyard. Shawn_Silva
You make it sound so easy, lol. You should come work for me! Take care Shawn
hackerace
Boy, I would sure be interested in this... too bad it's not happening. Seems some good ol' boy pulled out in front of me the other day and I need to spend his insurance money on some new front end parts

88whitestarion
Me too :'( This would be an excellent upgrade. Any weight off the front end would help alot. The stock bumper support is really heavy. Shawn, where are you? Dave
Bob1770
Boy, I had no idea that these things got that bad. I lost at least a couple pounds off my front end when all the rust came pouring out as I took it apart. The air dam brackets that Shawn sells in SS were almost non-existant, but I think $100 for a few small strips of stainless with a little tigging is way to much $$. I would like to see how these bumpers come out though, as mine isn't worth puting back on the car.
zactek
I recently bought a whole front end (support, foam, bumper skin, and spoiler) from Dr.Phil for $170 ;D He promised me little rust on the support and he was right. After taking everything apart, I realized that making this support out of aluminum is quite a feat, and actually it's not that heavy. There's a lot of subtle bends, brackets and angles to make it out of aluminum, even if you're good with a welder; it's intimidating...... ;D I'm currently modifying mine for a bigger intercooler opening and using POR-15 and stainless hardware throughout. Oh, and those brackets for the spoiler on E-bay for $100? Made them with $20 worth of stainless 1/8 stock, hehe ;D
Shawn_Silva
Good work, please offer them to the community, then I can retire. Take care Shawn
Bob1770
I agree, the factory bumper isn't that heavy, and cost versus weight savings is far from an advantage on that one. Likely why it never happened! Now, the air dam brackets, I could save members a lot by making these, but how many can I sell? Likely not enough to cover setting up the plasma-cam, let alone cover the initial cost of a sheet of SS. I don't think Shawn is here to rip members off, I just think that the demad is low. I could cut a lot of air dam kits out of a sheet, but how many do I really want to be stuck with, and for how long? Return is the bottom line here guys, at least(from what I have seen over the years), Shawn is involved in the building of his products, unlike other un-named, non-talented peddlers of products that are farmed out to buddies and local exhaust shops to make a profit off other peoples skills. Maybe I should go into the exhaust and pipe business, at least you know I would be building it, a true tradesman. The point of any and all of my posts is NOT to bash(at least not Shawn) people selling their products. I have nothing against people with skills trying to make a little extra money through a common interest, it's when the other talentless saps try to corner the market and take advantage of others that you here from me. zactek
Shawn, don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to step on anyone's toes ;D All I'm saying is that people that have fabricating skills (and equipment) can make their own for less than $100. It might have cost me $20 in materials, but it's quite a few hours of work. :-/ I don't intend to make or sell them to anyone, at $20? HELL NO!! Hehe For people that can't fabricate the brackets themselves and have proper-fitting, rustproof ones, it might be worth it........... Again, I don't mean to insult anyone's efforts; I think Shawn produces excellent products, more power to him! 8)
