Tacs unit

Recommended Posts

Trying to get the back up lights to work in this thing without putting them on a toggle switch. So my question is can I unplug the tacs unit and turn the car on, test light the wires with the car freaking out the next time I start it?

Yes, but the reverse light is a very simple circuit and I'm not sure why you'd need to disconnect the ETACS to troubleshoot it.   Manual or Automatic car?   Page 8-64 of the FSM electrical.  Power comes from fuse 14 (bottom right one in the panel in the dash).

As Jimmy indicated, make sure the ball bearing is under the switch, if the car is a manual.  But if it isn't, your reverse lights would be on all of the time.

It’s a manual. I haven’t taken it all the way out yet. I’ve been looking at the *DM book. I may have read it wrong but from the pictures it looks like it went through there. Also if the ball bearing isn’t there what can I do to replace it.

If I remember it is a  5/16 diameter ball ( 8mm )   but I think the lights stay on if the ball is missing.

That's correct.  It's an 8mm ball bearing and the reverse lights would stay on all the time (with key on) if it were missing.  If they never turn on, it is usually a broken wire near the switch on the transmission (in my experience) or fuse 14 is popped.

Okay so they don’t stay on. These fuse panel I’m looking for is under the antenna cancel button. If that’s right the fuse is good! Also I have power to the back up switch plug.

I lost that ball when changing out a trans before. After a while I said I was going to put in a toggle switch. Then I actually investigated and found the issue. It could be as simple as the connector just isn't connected anymore. Have you been under the car to take a look at the wiring to that switch? That's where I'd place my bet.

I assume you have never had reverse lights?

I’m not sure about the reverse lights. It was a project car of a buddies. We built it with some friends in college (15 years ago) he needed to find it a home so now I have it. I’m getting it road worthy and correcting a few things. It was last inspected in 09. It had an accident we put a new front end on it and built the motor.
