How can we bring life back into starquestclub?

Facebook is responsible for this, and I'ts a horrible platform. all the knowledgeable old timers aren't on social media, so all the younger guys asking questions ask on facebook don't get quality answers. Theres no more group buys anymore...i really miss the old days on SQC.

Same here. But it's not just this forum that is suffering because of Facebook. Many other automotive forums are too as well.

Well we could all lament, and wish for the good ole days.

or…

The remaining active participation here could come up with a plan to bring the  FB one liners back into the fold.

Facebook is monotonous. To sit for hours sifting through the “look what I bought/got/did” posts that disappear the next day is mind numbing.

I will not add “s***” to my story.
Nobody reads “ My Story”.

( Who wants to read a FB story from a 67 year old guy modifying an obscure, obsolete, car that doesn’t have either an LS or a 2jz smoking the tires at 60 mph on reels anyway?”)🤓

I blame F&F , and everyone of the stupid sss sequels that came after it as partly to blame.

The rest on social media itself.

When you go out to a restaurant or a club, and watch couples who have their face planted in the phone, or see entire groups that are separately looking for something “ funny” to share for the sake of filling the void that talking used to fill, it’s no wonder there isn’t anybody here anymore.

So, then……

What to do?

I’d imagine Site management can actively invite FB groups back to this site as a no BS solution to what’s typical there. The freakin ads  that plague every single search or post  here need to disappear too.

But that takes work from admin and sacrifice ( ad money sacrifice).

Not likely.

To post pictures all you have to do is drag the picture to your post.

Jimmy

It doesn't work unless your picture is highly compressed.

Really starquestclub needs to be updated and improved to compete with facebook and social media sites, to bring people back. I'd be willing to donate for that.

Jimmy, can you ask ryddler how much he would need to do that? Would be good to know a dollar amount.

I've gotten a lot of use out of this site and would support upgrades. I don't use facebook, and this site has so much historic information with the renovation threads, etc... it's really been an asset to me and will be for years to come.

I'll ask him. It was mentioned in the past to Bob but nothing came of it. He now hosts the site from his house after investing in what was needed to do it. The outside host is what screwed us on our lost information by shutting down without proper notice. I'm with you about contributing for the costs of maintaining without ads.

Facebook is not what pushed everyone away, it was how often the site crashed, then to add toppings, the worst crash (or server cut off?) when several years of data was lost.

The forum was always better than FB,  but the site going down all the time pushed people away.

Now there is 1,904,304 different SQ groups on FB from everyone making their own groups (typically after being banned from one) and I doubt you will get anyone to return at this point due to the simplicity of just using FB vs a forum.

Go figure. The most active post in years is about site activity.

We have voiced donating to the site many times over the years. I fear at this point Bob (Ryddler) just isn't into it anymore, yet doesn't want to release the reigns. The hayday of this site was a glorious thing! If only we had 25% of that back.

I post on the FB once in a while and try to help out, but it's sometimes too little among the sea of ignorance and keyboard mechanics. I think a lot of people go there just for more traffic. I'm definitely guilty of posting a pic with a quick question to try and get a quick response. I use imageshack for pics, so I haven't tried the drag and drop with the new setup.

For those of us in some of those Facebook groups, I think one of the things we could do is reply to questions with links to threads here that answer said questions, instead of answering them directly in Facebook. This should bring some traffic here, and hopefully some of that traffic will see "hey, there's a ton of other useful info here that's alot easier to sift through than Facebook is".

And for image embeds, I created this thread a while back for using Imgur for image and video hosting. Really the hardest part is getting the account setup (which really isn't hard). Once that's done, it's just uploading the picture to Imgur>copying the link>pasting it here; the forum software will automatically embed photos before you even click Post:

I believe long before the big crash I had offered to possibly host it at my work (if my boss gave approval)

I have some of the SOS saved to http://starquest.winchesterwireless.com that is just running on my home NAS (read only, accounts don't work)

It is what web archive was able to scrape (should be most posts too). I paid for it a few years ago and was finally able to get it to be useable.

There are 2 downsides though, 1) if the picture required to be logged in like attached to the post, it wont have it. 2) other photos tend to be photobucket and a lot of been deleted and/or may be deleted. Ideally need to use an extension to view them without watermark and save them. I believe I can edit any of the pages that are on this read-only copy. I should be able to replace linked images with a uploaded copy directly into it. (have not made this venture yet lol)

I do just this, whenever possible.  Although, I mostly just lurk on fb...or really just look at the messages that pop up in my feed...which is infrequent because I mostly use fb just to browse marketplace.   It's a good platform to say 'Hey, I took it out for a ride today' and toss in a picture, but using it to solve issues, nah.    Case in point, I now have eight old cars on my property, of different makes/models, thanks to my kids.  I'm subscribed to FB groups on all of them, but never once have I found any useful information on troubleshooting/repairing.  I have better luck finding information in forums and/or youtube.

I do wish it would evolve to the 'community' being mostly FB (like the BS forum on here) but the technical issues/resolutions handled via forums.  Although, I agree with some of the earlier posts in that the crashes, and especially the data server issue, drove many away for good.

Haha, good point!   That just goes to show that many have the same frustrations.
