Steering Box Woes

Very interesting. Just am wondering how they checked that it was in 'spec'. And what was the 'spec' they used.

Makes sense that the balls would wear the track being they are chrome plated but would it wear symmetrically? Such that just a larger ball would repair it without possibility of binding?

I'm curious to hear how it performs. Wonder who the supplier is for OS ball bearings.

they stated they carry many different size ballbearings

and mine being 4 over size = 4 thousandths was unusual.

they usually see 1 maybe 2 over but not 4. when i told them

the box was from an 89 they were like now that makes sense.

i sent them the link to your rebuild like 2 weeks before i sent

them my box and a link to the manual on starquestgarage.com

even though it was of the 88. they had some prep time. i doubt

they even checked the manual. but i know they peeked at the

post you made on the rebuild of the gear box.

I have mixed feelings about going this route. all i can hope for is

it works and lasts. at least for a while.

I wouldn't have mixed feelings. They do this for a living and I would expect that they know what they r doing. They probably can feel by hand a sloppy reciprocating ball system. So I have a lot of respect for that. Being the type of person I am, I just try to process what they did and why.

I'm very interested how it works in the end. And where to purchase os ball bearings. 4 mils is fairly big for that size ball, I do agree
