Was just thinking that the stock alternator in my stock 83' starion does not put out enough power to have much of a sounds system....does anyone know of or if it is even possible to just replace the oem alternator with a more powerfull one?

The battery handles rapid changes in load not the alternator. Alternators are slow to react and are always 1 step behind the battery in providing power for load spikes. A sub amp with 50 amp fuses isn't gonna pull 50 amps all the time. It may not ever pull 50 amps unless it's shorted. But there will be a current spike every time the sub "hits". Those spikes are handled by the battery.

So the first thing you should do when installing a bigger stereo is add a second/thicker chassis ground to the battery and a nice thick + cable to the amp. Adding an 8ga wire from the alternator to the battery + is a good idea too. Also make sure you have a good battery. A weak battery will make the alternator work harder and seem like it's not enough amps. Lastly if your battery is slowly going dead while using the stereo and driving then it's time to install a better alternator. A good way to test this is to measure the voltage at the battery before starting. Then drive with the stereo on loud for 30 minutes. Then stop the engine and measure the battery voltage again. If it's significantly lower then you need a bigger alternator.

Also don't buy that monster cable crap. Go to your local welding supply store and buy welding cable for half what monster cable costs. Welding cable can also carry more amps than monster cable. 4ga welding cable can carry 300 amps continuous duty and 500+ amps in short bursts.

So, this is a little old, but I wanted to respond here anyway. ucw458 is right about the order of upgrades for sure. If you have done all that then you can look at mechman alternators to get what you need. They dont hve it listed on the website, but They recently made one for me. Its a 220 amp alternator, fits perfectly in the stock location and was even powder coated blue just how I wanted it. All thier alts are hand made in the US. They have quick shipping and build times and excellent customer service.

With shipping, the powder coating and everything it was right around 600 dollars. Its a little expensive, but for being hand built specifically for our vehicle, its worth it. It also has a lifetime warranty which is awesome. Ever since Iraggi(sp) alternators went out of business, or just started doing crappy deals, mechman has been the top contender along with excessive amperage. Sadly, E.A. doesnt make alts for our cars. All in all I have no complaints with the alternator. I would spend the money on it again in a heart beat.
