Question for Burton or other bodywork people

First, its not a MOD so I didnt put in in that forum for bodywork mods.

OK I don't have a close up pic, or the correct wording so forgive me.

The black trim piece that runs from behind my front tire to in front of my rear tire on the bottom of the car on both sides....is it replaceable? It's obviously not built into the panels because it is a solid piece, so does anyone have any experience replacing this piece? Mine was swollen on the outside edges from age/rust when I got it, it hasn't progressed but it's bugging me.

Anyone have any tips on this?

Hmmm, it's hard for me to tell without knowing or seeing a pic of the piece you're talking about. Is it a metal piece or is it rubber, plastic? If it's metal, is it out of shape due to rust on the piece, or from rust bubbling up on the panels beneath it?

If it's rubber or plastic you may be able to form it back into shape with heat, and if it's metal, you might be able to tweak it some to straighten it out, after the rust is fixed. Probably the best bet tho is to find a new piece, or a good used one.

Can you get me some pics of it? It's hard to guess without seeing what's going on first hand.

I know the piece he's talking about, and I can see it in his sig pic, but I have zero experience working on flaties. I have an 85.5 outside, but I don't think it has that piece. Aside from that, I've only been around a handful of flatties at like meets, but never really looked close at those pieces.

hes talking about the big metal peice under the doors. the peice that bolts on. its inbetween the front fenders and rear quarters.

LOL...

If it's what I'm thinking of it's a metal piece coated in rubber, it's held on with clips and glue. When we painted a flatty, we just removed it and didn't put it back on.

it sounds like your talking about the outer rocker panel or a rocker moulding .if its a hard plastic or hard rubber that is cracked, you can go to your local auto paint store and ask for a bumper repair kit. its a 2 part epoxy. this is assuming im talking about the rt piece

If you look at the bottom of my car between the front and rear wheels, where the aussies would have a ground effects kit, my car has a metal black piece. It's not plastic or rubber but plain old metal coated in plastic I think, and its rusting

It's kinda hard to see in my sig, but you can see it. I think it looks good there and I'd like to replace it if possible.

Well, I kinda know that style of trim piece, and if it rusted , it will be almost impossible to fix, and you'll probably need a new piece. Of course, that's just guessing. I'd still like to see a pic, but maybe somebody with body experience, knows EXACTLY what the pieces are like and can help you. I'd love to, but without a pic close up I won't be much help. I looked and my 85.5 doesn't have one to look at.

Who knows, it may be fixable, but I can't tell ya how to do it without seeing it good.

LMFAO flattys do not have the bolt on rockers, Robert is talking about the black trim that clips onto the body. Yes you can replace it but finding a new pair will be the hard part

This is a rubber coated metal core trim. As Burton said, if it is rusted it is pretty much junk. If you can find out that isn't rusted, then all you need is a grey scotchbrite pad and a can of SEM trim black...it'll look brand new.

BTW: Is that penick's old car?

Ya thats pen's old car. I drove up to PA from NC to get her and have loved having her every single day. Trying to keep her up to par is tough on my budget, but I'm trying.

Thanks for the help guys. So now I need to try to find these new. Ya, there's no repairing my set, they are rusted beyond what I would be willing to fix. Anyone have a link to anything besides the 1988 starquestgarage thing where I might be able to find the OEM part number for these and see if there's any out there?

Thanks for the help fella's! Flatty love
