What's a good brand for track day tires?

I'm looking for track day tires in SHP sizes. What's a good brand? Just looking for a sticky street/track tire not a full blown race tire. Just something grippier than a standard passenger car tire.

Any suggestions?

Its all a matter of preference and how much you wanna spend. I have Falken Azenis RT 615s on my SQ and they grip very well and are considered a good track tire. They made the car handle sooo much better! I can also vouch that Toyo T1R's are very good tires as well.

I can't afford them just yet but. I've never really had sticky tires. Sure I've driven hard but in the past I've always been kinda cheap/poor when it came to tires. I've never spent more that $300 for a set of 4. Basically I want a street tire with loads of grip. It would be nice to get some track time but most of it's use would be on the street. I had a buddy with azenis 615s on his 86 rolla. He swore by them buy I can't find azenis in SHP sizes.

I have Azenis on the front, and Yokohamas in the rear. They grip really well, sometimes I wish I had cheapies on so I could just burn em off at will.

Most grip will come from the "speed rating". Get some Z rated tires and you should be miles ahead of the cheaper all season tires. The Z rated won't last as long (especially Azenis 30,000 miles) as H or V rated.

I looked into azenis for the front then saw your post. I was thinking of Azenis for the front and nexen 3000 for the rear. A few people are saying the nexen 3k is a good tire.

hahah you have found the bane of my truck exsistance. It happened about 3 years ago. Alot of makers quit making anything larger then a 225 for a 16" rim. You have to step up to a 17 + to get alot of choices in tire makers, as well as models of tires that are wider then a 225

I was going to go to 17's for the quest to avoid this but figured 17's will be next on the list.

^ Yep.

That's why I jumped on those Nexen's. You just can't find the assortment of manufacturers and sizes for our 16's. I looked for awhile to find a matched set of 225's and 245's for my SHP's and only came up with one brand, and at about $130/tire, I was not smiling.

see im lucky on my truck I run 255's all the way around so finding a 255 in an UHP summer only is hard enough. I lucked out and got the last toyo proxies t1r's I could find in that size but had to go with a 30 series profile :( not what I wanted and jacks up my spedo but O well (stock is a 235 55 16 I think.

When you decide which brand you want, hit me up. Yeah, you know it...I've got a tire supplier that supplies the tire stores  Of course, it's a warehouse and all they do is distribute tires so you gotta get them installed on your own, like $8-10 per wheel installed and balanced.

Yeah but I'm not going back to that tire shop you took me to. "we can't balance your truck tires, you wont notice a difference anyway." <_>

i would go with some BFGoodridge g-force. or some yokos avs es100s .thats what i use and they grip very nice.. the also use those on the skip barber cars here at laguna seca and my friend gets to test drive the cars once and a while. its also where i get my tires from. i do have an extra set of 225 50 16s and pretty soon might might be taking off the 225s in the rear i have now for 205. im getting too much rubbing.. Yoko discontinued the AVS ES100s if I'm not mistaken.

I won't lie, I've got the stock 16" wheels for drifting on garbage minivan tires. 17"+ for track/daily duty is my recommendation.

What are "SHP Sizes" anyway? What came factory on them?

Ahh really. Damn I knew I should have bought them when they were on sale a few weeks ago on tirerack. Well I bet you can still find them some where. If not then I agree with Robert and Mario the azenis rt-615 are really good in dry weather. Wet ground not so friendly. <--- so I've heard

That's what Ive heard too but they don't seem bad at all...Although I haven't pushed my car hard in the rain they seem to handle damn well. I can spin them rolling into 3rd in the wet tho once I hit boost :D

These are the tires I had on mine. Pushed them hard, and they always gripped very well.

Fronts- Dunlop SP Sport Maxx (non-shp 205s):

Rears- Dunlop Direzza DZ101 (non-shp 225s):

Both tread patterns are similar, and both are pretty stick once heated up.

ahh yess these tires are also very good. They run these on BMWs and a few times I had to change out the tires on customer request when I used to work at the dealer. So I would take them if they were still in good shape. Got lucky sometimes. I mounted them on the vw gti and they grip very well considering it's FWD. I need to go back there and get some more
