I Picked up another starquest this weekend. A little ruff on the outside, but pretty clean on the inside. Was red and painted silverish. AEM wide band, FCD, Fuel pressure regulator, some kind of boost control and not sure what turbo, but appears to bolt onto the stock manifold. Upgraded manifold, hardpipes, upgraded intercooler. More pictures to come.

Anyone know what turbo and boost control module these are?

Just thought I’d post a couple pictures of my ‘87 Starion from a local Cars and Coffee the other weekend. This C&C (Great Falls, VA) brings out some awesome cars, this time there was a F40 and a 190E Evo II, both of which were really cool to see in the wild. Every time I take the Starion out, I’m amazed at how much attention it gets, especially in that kind of company. At one point there was a bright green Aventador parked next to me and my brother and I watched as multiple people walked by taking pictures of the Starion, ignoring the Lambo. It’s fun to see these cars get so much love from other enthusiasts

Been gone a while and saw the site lost alot of posts, so I will start a new one. Got this 87 about 2 years ago and it was in a slight front fender bender. Well turn out to be more that that. The front was pushed back to much to repair so I just opted for a new front clip. This is where its been for a while now. I just need to make some more cuts to the frame portion to get it lined up properly and then weld it in. Kind of scare since I want to make sure its all lined up properly so that the front end looks level and not out of place. Then reassembly. Engine is in the corner of the garage. I need to take the turbo off and get it rebuilt. Any recommendations on who can rebuild our turbos? I would like a 16G or super 16G. Would also settle for a 14G.

I originally posted this in April 2020, and thankfully it was archived by the Wayback Machine, so I was able to recover it and post it again.

This is a long story, but I think it's pretty good. You might want to go grab a beverage.

I am back on the forum after a few years away. I joined in 2011 when I had my red '87. Unfortunately, that car suffered the same fate as too many others; engine went bad, got parted out. It deserved better, but that was the most practical choice for my situation in life at the time. I sold enough parts to break even and moved on. I sold the rolling shell to a guy who wanted to do a swap, so who knows, maybe it's still out there somewhere. I started making more money at work, bought a high-mileage C5 Corvette in 2013, and have had a lot of fun with that over the past 7 years. It now has twin turbos, and I've fixed or upgraded just about everything on it. I'm at the point where there isn't much left to do on that car except undo and redo the work I've already done. Some people have projects they just keep iterating on for the rest of their lives, but that doesn't sound satisfying to me right now. I was originally planning to sell the Corvette this spring to fund a cargo van camper conversion for my wife and I, but everything is on hold now due to the pandemic, so I might just hang onto it until next spring. Having two sports cars is fun, even though I can only drive one at a time!

So, about that red '88. Last fall, I started looking for another car. I was specifically looking at '80s cars because I wanted something I could take to the Back to the '80s car show near Minneapolis every summer. I'm not much of a car show guy, mostly because I'm not too into detailing, but that just seems like a fun show, and I wanted to be in the '80s car scene again. I was looking at Mk2 Supras and Starquests when this car showed up last September. I immediately got in touch with Greg23, got some more info and pictures from him, and everything looked and sounded good, so I put down a deposit and bought a one-way plane ticket to Indiana to pick up the car and drive it home to Minnesota at the end of the month.

Greg met me at the airport in Indianapolis with the car, and I got a nice 1-hour test drive back to his home in Lafayette. The car was exactly as he described, and I enjoyed driving it. I paid him the remainder of what I owed, we loaded the car up with as many of his spare parts as would fit inside, and I hit the road, right on schedule to make the 8-hour drive back to Minnesota and be home before bedtime.

Signing the paperwork at Greg's house.

I stopped at Wendy's for lunch on my way out of Lafayette, and just as I pulled into the parking spot, the clutch went to the floor and stayed there, and the engine stalled. I guess it wouldn't be a Conquest if it didn't strand me the day I bought it! (My '87 ran out of gas on the way home while the gauge still read 1/4 tank--previous owner forgot to mention that.) I was hungry, and I wasn't about to start fixing the car without a meal, so I went inside, got my food, and called Greg.

This car looks good, even when it's broken down in a Wendy's parking lot.

Before I bought the car, Greg had mentioned noticing a small leak that wasn't oil; he thought it might be coolant, but he hadn't traced it down. His first suggestion on the phone was to check the clutch fluid to see if that's what had been leaking, so after I finished eating, I went out and checked, and sure enough, the reservoir was empty. The Wendy's was in a larger shopping area, and I found a Pep Boys about half a mile away, so I walked over there and bought a quart bottle of DOT3, figuring I would be checking and topping off the clutch fluid periodically during my trip, just to keep up with the leak until I could get it home to fix it properly. When I got to the car and topped off the reservoir, the pedal wouldn't come back. I went through a couple rounds of filling up the reservoir, pumping the pedal a few times (having to pull it up off the floor each time), then getting out and filling it up again, but it just never seemed to build any pressure at all. Then I noticed the growing puddle under the car. Okay, this is a BIG leak. I figured the rubber hose between the master and slave cylinders had blown. I called Greg again, and true to the promise he had made when I left his house, "Anything happens this side of Chicago, I got you", he showed up in his truck with a jack, jackstands, tools, and a big piece of clean cardboard to slide under the car on, which made this about the most civilized parking lot fix I've ever been a part of.

	The puddle.

After lifting the car, we both looked underneath and neither of us could find anything obviously wrong. The rubber hose looked dry, and there was a little drop of fluid on the slave cylinder, but that was it. I got up and filled the reservoir again, then pressed the pedal while Greg was looking under the car. Clutch fluid shot out of the slave cylinder like a squirt gun! Okay, so the seal was completely blown; I was going to need a slave cylinder. We called every parts store in town, and all of them could order it and have it there tomorrow, but we needed it today. There was only one way to make that happen: drive an hour back down to Indianapolis to the AutoZone distribution center, where we would have the privilege of paying $15.99 for the one they had in stock. So, that's exactly what we did. Greg and I talked cars the whole trip; he told me stories about the international auto tours he had done though the Smithsonian, and we had no trouble passing the time.

As anyone who's ever replaced one knows, the slave cylinder on a Starquest is about the easiest job in the world. One banjo fitting, two bolts, clutch bled, done in 20 minutes. By the time we finished, though, the sun was starting to set, and I wasn't about to start my 500 mile drive. I booked myself a room at the Super 8, which Greg graciously offered to pay for, and he threw in enough to cover a much nicer dinner than Wendy's. Luckily, a co-worker (and fellow car guy) and his wife were coming into town to visit their daughter at Purdue. He was already bringing a toolbox for me (not so easy to carry onto a plane) and our original plan was to meet up mid-afternoon somewhere on the road, but since it was now evening, they were in town, and I was still here, they invited me out for dinner, which was a nice way to relax at the end of the day.

The trip home was fairly uneventful; it rained, but the tires are good and the wipers work great. No I-Pass, so I had to stop at all the toll booths and pay with cash. I stopped in Madison, WI to meet a friend from high school for lunch, and when I pulled into the parking lot at the restaurant he'd chosen, the car was steaming from under the hood. I checked the aftermarket temperature gauge: 230F. Okay, so the radiator fans don't work. It's fine as long as the car is moving fast enough to get airflow, but I had gotten stuck in traffic for a while. The head and gasket can only endure so many excursions above 220F, but so far there seems to have been no damage from this one.

At a gas station somewhere in Northern Indiana...or maybe eastern Illinois.

And, back home in my driveway.

Thanks again to Greg for what I still consider to be a great deal on a great car, all the help getting it fixed so I could get out of town, driving me to Indianapolis and back and paying for the slave cylinder, my hotel, and dinner. I have a lot more updates and pictures to post, but it's late, and I've mortgaged enough sleep for one night. Hope you had fun reading the story. I am happy to be back in a Conquest!

Thanx to Nikofab for posting the link, this car was in Nebraska at a Ford dealer. After a couple emails and a phone call i put down a deposit on this one owner, bone stock jewel and made the schlep. it was everything it was supposed to be Everything works except the cruise control and the power antenna. The original owner surely loved this car because it was well taken care of and drives beautifly. All i've done was polish the factory wheels and clean it. I do plan on changing the exhaust ( it's somewhat clogged cats is choking it and seconday cat ratteling against the mount is making me ) to a 2.5" with a Hooker Aero Chamber muffler, fixing the cruise control and power antenna. One day it'll get a repaint of the x56 color and a cleanup under the hood. It's been my DD since the day i brought it home ...yes, i can still drive a 5 speed

dealer photo

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/0126975570f64f049f60ffd71701b22f_zps3ed4f3a8.jpg

ready for the long trek home

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/855_zps7435ce06.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/8555_zpsb63fa60b.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/855out1_zps285b5fc6.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/855work_zpsb7db8052.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/855out_zpsdbffef49.jpg

playing around with different wheels

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/855mesh_zpseeb83792.jpg

http://i154.photobucket.com/albums/s263/aiche_photos/85%205%20ESi/SHPFlat3_zpsa4f0c7a0.jpg

My MPI 86'

When I picked the car up in Pomona it was completely stock with the

exception of a rebuilt head. I don't own a quest though I think they are sweet and wouldn't mind one day thanks to Dave...any who about the table. I got some parts from members here on the boards and snooped around on facebook to get the parts I wanted. I'd like to thank Mark Wade for donating the "saltwater turbo", Dred_85.5_Tsi for the head/cam/valve cover and the guy who sold me a cracked manifold for just shipping who's name I can't recall. I enlisted the help of another friend of ours to sand blast the cast iron parts prior to painting.... anyway I'll post he pics in order of progress. Feel free to ask any questions.

<a href="http://s174.photobucket.com/user/pushrodcav/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20140329_123722_zpsygdlke0o.jpg.html" rel="external It was a 87 Silver H43 5spd, with only 49k miles on it. I had previously looked at this same car sitting at the same dealer 10 years earlier with an $7000 price tag. It had sat on that lot for at least 11 years that I know of. I was working part time for this dealer in 2002 while traveling for another job.I asked about it and the owner said it was for sale but did not run. He said $2000 so I checked it out. The ovcp was off so I put a battery on it and pour some fuel in the TB. It fired right up and died. I went back in a bought the car. Pulled the tank cleaned it and put a new fuel pump on it. It took some time but I got it driving and started using it to travel in some times. I was just outside of Paris, TN at a gas station when a guy flagged me over as I was about to pull out. I thought who in the hell is this.. It was a member here named Terry aka "conquestnut" he had a white conquest with a cowl induction hood and black stripes with some nice rims. He also had a couple other conquest at his house. He informed me of this site so I started lurking here. Thats when I found members close to me, Stvblk1, UltimateLurker, helrazr70, Tekki_Shodan, Instigator_88TSI, Jeff and Bill. I joined and then ended up getting a few more of these wonderful rides.

Here is my first Conquest..

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/ramquest.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/lonequest.jpg

Here it is at a Cars for Kidz show in Selmer,TN.

Had this drawn that day, still got this pic in a frame.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/Conquest.jpg

So then in 05 I went and got all crazy and started buy parts for an MPI swap. I was working on this car everyday after work. I spent countless hours in the garage cleaning detailing installing and almost cost me a marriage over this.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/april001.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/clarkhead1.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/header004.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/questmpi003.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/turbo011.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/questmpi006.jpg

Here it is with my second conquest that I rescued from a junkyard.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h95/ZPI28/My%20Cars/87%20Eiger%20H43/questpair1.jpg

my portfolio

pics will be up soon

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w316/conquest232/100_1245.jpg

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w316/conquest232/100_1246.jpg

The Beginning of the Ultimate Starion Build

I will update with more as we get deeper.

http://i1201.photobucket.com/albums/bb345/InsaneSpeedLV/WideStar/startrack_zps094cacdb.jpg

1988 Durban Maroon Conquest TSI

As some of you may or may not know ive bin looking for a durban maroon auto w/tan&black cloth for better part of 9 years. The close I ever came was just maroon on maroon car. Well 2 weeks ago I come on SQC like I do every day, and. Heck whats new. I hit up the ebay/craigslist section and first listing. I could not believe my eyes. There she was.......my unicorn

As many know I am recovering from 3rd degree burns over 30-40% of my body. I have not worked since my accident on april 8th. Much the same when I was out cor my back injury, money is short to say the least. Now here is my unicorn right in front of me and I have no way only getting it. I was about to call it quits and my little sister Lauren calls me and said if you really want this car ill pay for it. Of course I said yes and myself and a friend drove 34 straight hours to Tennessee and back to Pennsylvania. It wasnt the best road trip, but I had my unicor. On the trailer heading home.

So a little about the car. One owner 81k automatic tan&black cloth straight line interior. Interior is super clean with only small seam came apart. In the glove box I found the owners manual, ooriginal window sticker of just under $23k. The had traded in his 83 dodge pick up. The car has bin garaged and very well mantained. Lets start off with the first picture I had seen of the car on SQC.

http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/starquestJOE/00f0f_2eBkfiMDPm3_600x450_zpswicipctt.jpg

this is where the car had sat for near 9 years the owner wanted to paint the car. Well went back and forth with his the owner of the paint shop for 6 years. Well the original owner ended up passing away before he had got the car painted. The owner of the paint shop left the car in side this he was able to get ownership of the car. Thats when he listed it on craigslist

Now that I have the car home its time to brinv it back to her former glory. I want to keep it as close to stock as I can. The first thing I found it needed was a good cleaning. I havent done that just yet. But here she is at home with her big hp brother

http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/starquestJOE/20140619_185613_zpsxhkclv3o.jpg

First real problem with the car is it needed a fuel pump. So I dropped the tank only to find it full of rust! The car is so clean other wise. No rust on the what so ever. Even the gold zinc plating is still on the hardware for the tank

http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/starquestJOE/20140624_193921_zpsg1jaf5eg.jpg

Looks great but its what I found on the inside

And here is a sneak peek at whats to come......

http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/starquestJOE/20140624_193206_zps2ntyucqq.jpg

I will update as I go along with its clean up. My family farms and raises cattle so I stay very busy but always find time to work on the quest. I've been on here for a little over a year but haven't really got to show off my 1987 TSi. I got the car from my uncle when I turned 16 with only 47k on it. It had a little bit of a rough life before I got it as it was wrecked and is only a salvage title but everything was repaired pretty well and its really a pretty good car. The car had not ran in a few years and needed some love.. had to clean out the fuel tank and replace all the filters to get it to run. Here are a few pictures of what the car looked like when I bought it (not much has changed except under the hood)...

http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/drakelehr/IMAG0250_zps29c9f960.jpg

And completely stock under the hood

http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/drakelehr/20130324_123750_zpsc5ba05ed.jpg

Since Then I have been modifying and fixing and upgrading almost everything.. heres some more pictures along the way

Deleted some and replaced all other vacuum lines and new coil

http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/drakelehr/20130401_191036_zpsb1782740.jpg

Cosmo Racing open air filter for stock MAF and deleted some emissions junk

http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/drakelehr/20130401_214351_zpsb99c6c16.jpg

Painted some intercooler pipes, etc. added magnecor plug wires (going with a red and silver theme)

http://i1321.photobucket.com/albums/u560/drakelehr/20130714_173245_zps02055a3e.jpg

Bought some Motocam 360 Hood Struts from Tim E. and got the chrome OVCP I've been looking for. Was one-family owned until earlier this year when they traded it in. It has been repainted which was done VERY nicely (I do 100K+ resto work, I'm picky, and I'm happy with it for a daily driver), and the wheels were refinished but everything else seems to be mostly original. The stereo has been updated which I'm not crazy about, and under the hood has been blacked out (sheetmetal only). Has 166K on it but runs great with no squeaks/rattles in the interior. Clutch, brakes, and shifter all feel great. The steering is the worst thing about it, it has some play so it wanders around a bit, that'll be the first thing fixed.

Interior is great as well, only two very small (3/4") tears in the driver seat and they aren't really noticeable. The carpet is like new, as is the dash, back seat, headliner, and door panels. Really the only wear is on the front seats and steering wheel. The trip reset button is broken off, seems to be pretty typical.

Haven't decided yet if I'll keep it long term or enjoy it for awhile then sell it and finish my one owner '89 SHP/sunroof. I really like the 88/89 cars more than the earlier widebodies, but this car is so clean that I know I won't find another like it without doing a ton of restoration work to my '89.

<a href="http://s1315.photobucket.com/user/andersonautoglass/media/Facebook/87%20Conquest%20TSi/1621749_10154009711940468_3127159588243646233_n.jpg.html" rel="external
