texanquest
What would be the best way to identify an 86-87standard transmission from a 88-89 just by looking at it from the bottom? I have an 87 Starion with a non original transmossion and I want to buy a clutch kit before pull it down. One more question: is there a big difference in performance between them both? I was trying to check on the FAQ section but for some reason I'm not allowed to view pictures. Thanks in advance for any comments.

slowquest
It's possible that you could still have the bigger flywheel/clutch combo though. I'm not sure of any way of checking it with the trans in the car still. Although, if the cars an 87, and the trans is the 87 style, chances are really good it's an 87 (small) clutch. Indiana
look at the flywheel, if the pressure plate ends up at the outer edge of the wheel you have the larger hole pattern for your clutch meaning its the larger clutch pre88 trans had tin oil panan 87 trans has a raised place on the bellhousing with a VIN number stamped on it, an 86 DOES NOT, that was an 87 change for theft prevention you need to know if the vin is there if its an intercooled trans or a non intercooled trans because you may get the wrong slave and throwout bearing, you'll see year differences in clutch catalogs but its related to if the trans was in an intercooled car or not and there could be a nonintercooled 875sp and if you think it was from an 87intercooled and get the wrong slave/bearing it won't work right if there is no vin on it, it could still be from an 86 intercooled at that point you need to measure from the tip of the pivot ball to the bellhousing face and see which trans it is because its the wall that pivot ball is mounted to that got thicker and moved it forward causing the need for the change in the slave/bearing
