FijiPhil
Well Ive looked into all of the common electrical problems that would make the OD not work. The tranny seems to be great other than this. Im guessing its something mechanical though. What is a common mechanical issue? I know very little about auto trannys, and im thinking i might be better off taking it to a shop. I just dont want to spend a lot of money right now. Any ideas? Shelby
your od is diff from most od units,,the electrical part causes the od NOT to work , a simple test to see if the OD will work is to pull the relay , if it now works then the problem is in the electrical part not the trans the relay is in the fuse relay panel on the drivers side , it should be the largest relay,,and has od relay mark'd on it ,,the most common problem is the thermo ground swt on the intake near the thermostat houseing , it has to ground befor the od will work

I read somewhere that the transmission has to be under load in order for it to work. I tried to do it while i was driving but i couldnt. Can i do it when the car is still? mikec
Auto tranny uses output shaft RPMs to help determine shift points so you need to be driving. That plus engine vacuum are what control the shifting. The temp switch and relay DISABLE O/D until the engine warms up; thus unplugging the relay is a quick way to activate it... if it still won't work then it's a problem with the tranny itself. Most of the time though it's the temp sensor: the wire inside it breaks apart (if the connector tang moves/twists around you can bet the sensor is shot) and the sensor has too much resistance so the relay stays in the "cold engine, disable O/D" position. mike c. BaltTSI
And if all else fails, and you know everything electrical is working, then the next thing is the OD band it's self, it can be adjusted outside of the tranny, I adjusted mine but it was so worn out (it has material on it like a brake shoe, but is in the shape of a band that wraps around a drum, when it's engaged it holds this drum which engages 4th gear) anyway, when I tried to adjust mine it wore off the little bit of material that was left and then the metal started eating into the drum  not cool, so I ended up taking the tranny out and replacing this band with a new one, works great now.If you follow the procedure for adjusting the band, and that adjusting screw goes in farther than the procedure says, then STOP, you'll just screw up your OD drum like I did if you run it like this, but I had a whole spare laying around so it was no biggy to replace just the drum....and the band
