Started building my new exhaust

I'm upgrading my exhaust because the 2.5 was too small for MPI. I knew it would be but it was all I had at the time. I'm starting from scratch with just some mandrel bends and straight pipe. I didn't want to have to redo it down the road so it's all stainless pipe with 5 V-band joints. Gonna be so much easier to take apart with V-bands instead of bolts. Cost me $100 for V-band joints but oddly 2 bolt flanges would have cost more.

I haven't used my welder for over a year. Kinda like riding a bike. You don't forget how to do it you just forget how to be really good at it. lol My welds are ok though. Not as pretty as I would like but they will hold. I should practice with it more often. Even if I'm not working on a project.

Anyway here's a pic of some of the stuff I'm adding to the car.

GT35r ........... well an ebay/china clone of a GT35r. I didn't have the $$$ for a real garrett. I can blow up 8 of these for the price of one garrett.

Along with that I'm installing a bosch 044 pump to feed my FIC 1250cc injectors. I'm on a mission to blow up my trans or snap my driveshaft. :P

Sweet. You will dig the 3" stuff. Only thi g i didnt like was even building my own exhaust, 3" hangs lower than i like. So i crushed or ovalized the straight section directly u der the floor. Only like 4-5' that was nessecary. I made its working height down to2.25" and it looks much better. Barely see it hanging below.

Also think about getting yourself a dumptube in there. Mine exits rigbt behing the fron t tire and even though i did it for looks more than anything and its only 2" its still good for 30hp on the dyno

Mine is still dumping right behind the crossmember also. I was thinking to bri g it out right behind the front tire along side my dump tube, but therd is no room un der the floor and to utilize some wheel well space wout getting into tire turning room is a real pita.

Haven't been able to work on it for a few days. Almost done. Need to mount the muffler and run the pipe from the cat to the muffler. Should have it done tomorrow. I'll post pics of my terrible welds then. :P

I can weld pretty good it's just that I'm out of practice. After not using the welder for a year all the muscle memory is gone. This stainless mig wire also welds a little different than regular steel wire. Not sure if it's just the shielding gas. When I weld with CO2 I get really good penetration. Stainless wire seems to need more heat too. I would practice more but only have a 1lb spool of stainless wire.

Good stuff! Someday I'll get the ambition to make my own exhaust. Since it's a dual setup on my ride it is a real PITA to get it to hang high enough to clear anything and the local shops never listen when I tell them where I want it routed

You should be on pure argon for stainless and pay good attention to butt welds. May need backpurge to prevent sugaring with ss filler

Stainless mig can be done with argon or tri mix. Tri mix is helium, argon, CO2. Stainless mig welds a little better with tri mix. If I had a second regulator I could have back purged with argon but I don't. I didn't get much sugaring anyway.

Well it took longer than I thought mainly because I was busy with other stuff. But it's almost done. I just have to install the external WG and the resonator.

I ordered one of these resonators to run instead of the cat. Only need the cat on when I'm smogging it. The resonator will get it's own Vband flanges so it'a an easy swap out.

For the project I got pipe fro Ace Stainless. It took almost 8' of 3" pipe and 5-90 deg mandrel bends.

Jeff, what are you using for an exhaust manifold & waste gate?

How are you going to support the additional weight of the bigger turbo and it's (what appears to be) adapters to the exhaust manifold & exhaust piping/tubing?

Got any pictures?

You did a good job of tucking the exhaust tubing nice & tight to the body, frame and the rear control arms.

What was your total materials cost?

For What It's Worth.

KEN
