fox body or not?

Been throwing around the idea of swapping a 5.0 in my 87 conquest. Not to clear on what 302 to put in there. I will be wanting efi just cause it will be a daily driver and it gets pretty cold in Minnesota. T5 also. What years did ford make a good 302? I also will be looking for a engine transmition combo just to save on not having to buy extra stuff (flywheel, pressure plate, ect). Been looking on craigslist and already have found some pretty good deals. Just need to know what I should go with.

dont quote me but i believe 89-92 h.o.'s had the factory forged pistons which kinda made them better. the 90 i have sitting on my garage floor has them, i was doing the swap but went another way (parted car) also do some research on the explorer 5.0's, they werent forged but i believe they had the gt40 heads and better flowing intake Edited by turbojeeper

dont get the fox body stock 5.0 its a POS only like 20 more hp and 20 give or take more ft.lb then a stock engien in the quest (not bad for being half the size) so just get rid of the jet jalves and upgrade the turbo and exhaust and and what ever else you need and you will have a much better engien then the 5.0 and you can go mpi to be even better

The difference is the 5.0 is rock solid reliable and makes more power. Yep its a pos though.

 

This is correct. You could do it for around 1200$ and even though its only 215hp stock its not a g54b...and it could be 300hp a lot easier and cheaper.

I just drove my mechanics 88 convertible for 7 months while we rebuilt my conquest engine, it was no slouch with pulley's, BBK intake and exhaust.....didn't scream but sounded mean and had some kick for 180k miles. The potential is there but just like the conquest how much do ya wanna sink into it?

I'm getting the feeling you guys don't like my idea of putting a 302 in the quest. I realize that it will be big job. But finding parts for a dead horse also is no fun. Don't get me wrong here. The does fly when it runs. I have owned this car for almost 10 years now and have moved 5 times. And I have put only 400 miles since I bought it. I just want it to run and stay running whenever I turn the key. I do like the sound of a good ol v8 as well. And as far as swapping in a motor the 302 seems to be the best bang for my buck. And there are enough people on here that have done it and can answer any question I might have during the process. Plus anyone looking for a g54b will 115xxx on it can hit me up.

I'm doing the same swap soon, I just picked up a 302 from a 92' foxbody. I Trickflow heads. cams, and intake, shorty headers, 24# injectors, and was rebuilt about 3k miles ago. Got it for $775 with a new clutch included plus motor mounts, ecu, harness, and anything else i may need. Got it from a good friend, when it was in his car it dyno'd close to 370hp over the summer. I cant wait to throw it in the quest.

As much as I'd hate to say it, I'd rather see an ls1 or 2jz swap than a 5.0.

 

 

 

But I hate the typical mustang douchebags and therefore hate their cars, motors, and all involved with them. So I'm a little biased.

 

 

Be different and throw a small block mopar in there. Theres a whole magazine write-up on it, plentiful in the new dodge rams, and you'd be getting 250hp/350tq (at the crank) right out of the box fuel injected.

 

 

And they don't break nor do they have the douchebaggery associated with them. But once again, I'm a little biased :)

LS1 and 2jz are probably atleast 3x more expensive to swap in.

The friend I got my 302 from has been racing Winsor based engines for over 25 years and has great success with them from 302 blocks to 351w blocks they have treated him well even when he beats the hell out of them around the track then drives them home.

 

 

There is douchebaggery associated with all groups of anything from cars to religions to countries to cultures. I'm sorry you base your opinion of the many off of a few. Most of the mustang or ford guys I know are cool and decent people. The few douche bags ruin it for them. Me, I like all makes whether it be ford, chevy, bmw, or toyota I like them all, there are certain models from companies I may not like but I dont hate the whole for reasons of the few. I guess I'm the type who likes cars as a whole and not a narrow minded one make takes all enthusiast.

 

FYI, everything breaks.

Almost anything > g54b...

 

Your gonna get crap like the rest of us that have swapped. Just do it, accept it, and be happier with your starion when your done. Don't worry about the flak along the way.

I've met one cool Mustang owner and that's my grandfather...has a 99 Cobra...and thats just because he liked the car, he's not a Mustang guy.

 

 

But around here they're douches...just like the Honda queers. The people make me hate the cars. In all honesty, the only car people I can stand that aren't douches are the Starquest guys (we're all weird though...but cool :P me too, I admit), and the BMW e30 people.

 

Car people today aren't car people...they're drama queens.

And they all break, just some not as much. Like a G54b for instance...that breaks a lot. My turbo 2.2, I've had it 3 weeks I've been able to drive it one week...now its the previous owner's dumb fault, but still...it broke.

 

All four of my 5.9s I've put over 400k miles on combined...never left me stranded once. Have broke, but never left me sit...says something...haha.

 

Ford 5.0s and 4.6/5.4s...oh dear lawdy...

 

But maintenance has a lot to do with anything.

iirc the pre 89 ho 5.0's had forged pistons from factory, late 89-91/92? they had "hypertech" (i think thats what they called em) pistons, lighter but not forged... i had a 89 fox just before my conquest and liked it the 3 times i drove it. I only sold it cause i liked the conquest styling better and it was a rusty junk bucket.

 

if you do go through with this swap id like to see it, ive got a friend who's pretty into mustangs and we just put a 89 5.0 into his 98 mustang and hes beat the living crap out of it. i could get info from him if needed.

the 87-91 mustang had forged pistons but only the 89-93 foxes we MAF cars.

 

only the 96-97.5 explorers had the gt40 heads and intake. but you don't get the t-5 for your swap.

 

the t-5 is a perfect fit for the SQ...however if you ad any power more that stock...they grenade.

 

best bet is to get a 90-91 fox and ditch the t5 for a tremec TKO...ditch the intake for a trickflow or a gt40 and slap a trickflow stage 1 cam in it and you will be all gravy!

I have a 302 swapped into mine and all i gotta say is i've had to fabricate everything to do it BUT i also moved the engine back pretty far for better handling so i guess it comes with the territory. It's out of an 80 mustang i built my T-5 to handle more power than the engine will throw at it. Everyone has their favs so do what u want i've been gettin alot of crap for my swap too but haters will hate and some ppl will love it. Edited by sleeper tsi

When I start picking fights with random people and walk up to peoples car saying its a pos and my mustang will s*** all over it....then I'll consider that truth.

 

 

But then again it might just be the ones in my area. They ride around thinking they're big cheese. And I'll admit, I like the look of some of their cars, but the problem is, they know they look nice and they let everyone know.

 

 

Honda kids just get in fist fights instead of proving who's faster.

 

 

All the other car people in my are (240s, bmws, the few starquest people) stand around and bs and laugh at the mustang and honda people...lol Oh and diesel truck people...blowing black smoke in peoples windows and all...i don't like them either.

 

Then again I'm not racist or prejudice, I just hate everyone equally...so...yea.

 

 

But definitely not me. Come to Hanover/York Pa once...you'll see what I mean...lol We do have a helluva car scene though.

I'm sure there's a few good ones around here...I don't know of any though. We have a group of about 10 or so. Only one guy is ok, but he still talks about how fast his stock 5.0 is. Walked up to me and started telling me it would walk all over my GLHS Charger. I simply said ok...I wouldn't doubt it.

 

Later on that night we happen to pull up next to each other. After I walked him, he became much less high and mighty towards me and is kinda cool now.

 

 

And many of the guys with the mustangs would waste half of what is out there (many supercharged cars, etc)....but, my Charger is quick, I don't gloat about it because I know there's always someone faster. That group likes to make it known they drive the fastest things around.

 

Maybe I am being judgemental, I just dislike people who think their s*** doesn't stink.

 

 

 

 

But...lets get off this and back to the topic at hand...didn't mean to thread jack with my comments.
