flatty86
I finally get this car running after months , to find out the car needs an alternator. After 5 hours of installing the alternator and buying all new belts and tune up, the car starts to run like crap.. After I install the alternator I take the car out for a test drive...pull back up to the house and the car just dies.. no light no lights in the dash , nothing... so I take out my fusible link box, clean those and install new links...I install the box and everything lights up. as soon as I turn the ignition, click everything turns off,, I even went as far as cleaning the ground wire connections...same crap.. light up and then click, everything dies like there isn't a battery in the car....I don't know what else to do and i'm tired of the car. Where else should Look? I tried everything!!!

JohnnyWadd
check the main fusible link. thats a common cause of that. dead battery sucking lots of amps off the new alternator could have fried it.
MotoCam360
What's the condition of the battery - new, used, don't know?? I ask because we've had 3 batteries go bad in a week because of some of the recent cold weather we've been having.... Don't overlook the simple stuff when troubleshooting
flatty86
its a brand new battery. but the alt was shot... I was having issues with the fusible link prior to buying the alt.. I could usually wiggle the wire a bit and the car would start,, now nothing....If I wait about 15 minutes and turn the key everything will light up, once I crank it you hear a click and everything dies.. that's why I took out the box this time and cleaned and added new links
flatty86
where do I locate the fusible link for the battery to the Alt?
strang3majik
The main fusible link is right after the positive battery terminal in that little black plastic piece (or from the terminal to that piece, don't really remember). For testing purposes...run a wire bypassing it. If it starts, there you go. And how did it take 5 hours to do the alt?!?!?

Magnesiac
How's your battery cables? Mine did that once because of corrosion in the cable itself. Make sure everything is clean, cables, connectors, fusible links. Electrical is tough to diagnose at times. Just be calm and you'll get it sorted out. Keep us posted. MotoCam360
I've seen starter solenoids go bad and cause this "clicking" issue too. If all your electrical checks out, pull the starter and have it tested.
