302 Swap

Hey guys,

 

So I am almost done pulling the 2.6 and accessories out of my Conquest. As soon as a corral the rust, I want to drop a carbureted 302 into it. I have seen the threads on how the mounts fit, that you have to fab up a tranny cross member, etc. But I haven't seen anything on what has to be done to the suspension? Do i have to beef it up or...?

I think your gonna have to get a new fuel pump...I would just go mechanical for simplicity sake. You'll burn the pump up trying to regulate 15psi and no return line out of the carb.

to regulate a stock efi pump down to 15psi, you need a GOOD regulator. If it isn't going to be boosted, replace the stock pump with a piece of hose, and use a mechanical like BOHO mentioned.

Obviously you would need a good one. Holley makes one for this very purpose. I am still trying to make the mechanical one work, but I just wanted to know my options. Thanks for your help

I guess I should have stated that the cost of the regulator far exceeds the cost of a mechanical fuel pump.

the $30 regulator, will not work, the pump will overrun the regulator. I think when you get over $100 in the billet series, it may work, but I'm not 100% on that.

most carb regulators can't handle the gph an efi pump flows, thus overrunning it and creating a lot higher pressure than expected. (this changes with voltage as well)

you should be able to drop the tank and replace the pump with a piece of hose, and while you are in there change the filter and screen.

Yeah, I was just having a problem with the power steering pump conflicting with the mechanical fuel pump. I think I figured out how to move it around. Thanks for the advice!

I'm doin the same swap and i'm running a summit racing billet low profile high flow mechanical fuel pump. Edited by sleeper tsi
