i think that our doors are too heave for a apiller hinge.. dont you?

i found a company that will make the hinge for us if we have 10 or more people, but its 1599 i believe give or take a little... still a little too much for my blood.. im sure that there is a cheeper route to doin this. there are a lot of handy people on this site maby someone can disign there own and sell them on here?

I made a design a while back on these. Just never really did anything with it. Too much other stuff going on. I might take them to a machine shop this summer.

 

basic hinge with swivel.

There was a guide pin that did not allow the door to go up or down until it was open a certain distance(2-3").

The harder thing would be to find the stuts needed.

If you ask why you would have to open 10-15* before you can raise the door... look at the door pin locks... no way you can hit those vertical.

i have access to get this done at a machine shop my buddys dad works in one and i wouldnt have to pay for labour nor the metal, he said that he would use scrap metal from around the shop to do it.. if i can get your plans for this i will pass these on to him. just send them to creed___@hotmail.com

i'd love to do this to my car as well aslong as it doesn't take any painting cuz then i'd never be able to do it unless i got the whole car repainted. but this something i was going to try and do when i'm older and have a job so i have a little money to play with and was going to do this or a targa to my parts quest cuz the body on it is perfect besides the air dam. i personally would rather have lambo style doors though because 1. easier and 2. i could park my car where i want and not a mile away so i can stay away from cars just to open my door.

your design and his dads machine shop... i have a feeling that this is goign to be like a $25 part lol... that would own if we could get this to be a direct bolt on kit

and if they are cheap i would buy a few kits!!

I will forwarn, the design that I did, did not have anything concrete. It was the basic hinge/pin design. I did not have access to a door hinge off the car then, nor do I now.  So...

 

I will try to get somethings(demensions) before I redo it.

 

EDIT1: Ok, I just spoke to A freind. He will pull a hinge off his '87 for me to use for basic design/mock up.

 

EDIT 2: I will try (TRY) to have something by Wensday. But no promises, cause if it is not done by then, it will be a while cause my engine is coming back from the machine shop and is going for final assembly. For those wondering, it's a 2.0 swap that I am working on.

that would be great.. just send them to me when every you get it done. and ill see what i can do with those. now the kits will be probably around 100 bucks because you need hydrolic shocks to assist the door when opening. but lets get the prototype done first and go from there.

OK I have the rough drawings w/ measurments done again. Amazing, only took like 5 min... LOL... ::)

 

Anyway, The parts I am looking at incorporating are very thick, very heavy duty and simple. Example- the swing arm function piece is an over 1" thick with high load bearing pressed in. The the swing out pin is 1/2" thick.

But even with all this heavy metal, it is still thinner then the actual door hinge. I still have 3/4 or so to play with... ;D

I am doing something tonight, but I will try to get the drawing down to very techincal and the exact measurments by tomarrow.

WHOOHOO!!!!, Let's get this party started!!!  ;D ;D ;D

 

The doors are so freakin' heavy on my 89 that it's an effort just trying to swing the door in when I'm finally in.  I think the hinges are on their last legs and are about to

give any minute now.

 

I figured, since work is going to be involved in getting hinges replaced, might as well go the route of a nice option as vertical scissor door set up if this thread ever takes off!!!

Ok since people are concerned about weight...

 

I am bumping the swing link up 1/4" and the pin up to 3/4"

The bearing size can stay the same, as the load surface is the same.

 

Still working on drawing, just not tonight, busy fragging people at a BFVietnam LAN... just thought I would give an update and show I am paying attention...

well cost will be alot cheeper then buying from someone else. because they are $1300 plus for the hinges anywhere else..

 

Yea, but I won't pay anywhere near that price for these.  Even though they are cool, it's just not THAT important.  If the "price" stated above is close to the actual price, I'll take a set.  I know they won't be free or anything but seriously.

Ok, before we can get struts picked we need to know the REAL weight of the door...

No guesses, no "arounds" and actual weight. Then we can get a rough figure as to how much force will be needed to open the door drom the new fulcrum point.

Which just off the top of my head I will guess in the 2-250 neighborhood. But that depends on the WEIGHT of the door.

If I saw this sooner I could have weighed my door, I had it off my silver conquest for like a week but never saw this post and now the car is gone, The doors are VERY light I would have to say around 40 to 50lbs, I will weigh my door the next time I take my front fender off I will take the door off as well. I am pretty interested in this, Do you know the angle that the door will be up on and will these doors be like the ones for a civic where you open the door just a little and then swing it up??

the angle it is open fully at depends on the stroke of the cylinder used.

That is a good question though, as I might want to put in stops...

ok where's my dial indicator... .... ... ok... could we live with 50*? I would not say anything over 60*

 

Also, the door have to weight more then 40-50 Lbs... hell the head weights about that. -I know this cause a head, timing kit, head bolts and gaskets weigh in at 43-

Well I know you said no "arounds" but this is only a couple pounds off, I weighed mine a while back and they were AROUND 80lbs this is within 3 pounds or so so that should be enough to work with. I later shaved at leasat 10 lbs off of each door by cutting some unneccesary metal and eliminating the speakers but if your going to make a kit this wouldnt be practical to everyone.

Ok, I will do some calc with the 80^ figure.

I just meant, I did not want oh they weigh 35 ^s, there is just no way.

 

Actually, I think I did the rough 2-250 pressure with a weight of 75 or so...  so maybe to be safe get a strut(s) that can push 300ish ^s.

 

This is where it gets tricky, and expensive... someone try to find the part number for the Delorian door struts... If memory serves, they were only about 14" long compressed. and they used 2. We could get by with 1 probly as the angle of attack and pitch force is far less then the Delorians. (plus they have close to a 150^ door)
