Coolant Temp Sensor location?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Right now I have this abortion looking solution for a thermostat that involves taking two thermostat housings and bolting them to one another with a thermostat in between. It looks awful and puts the thermostat right up against the driver's side wheel well. I found on Jeg's they have a couple in-line thermostats available so I was going to pick one of those up.

The issue with that is there would no longer be a place to put the coolant temp sensors. I am running two as one is going to the stock gauge on the cluster and one goes to the MS input. Where should I put these sensors? The only place I can think of off the top of my head is that I can tap into the manifold itself as the FIP hurricane manifold has a 6" long tube coming out of it for the coolant and with it being thicker gauge aluminum I take it that would be a satisfactory place to tap into.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into that--sounds like a pretty clean alternative to drilling into the FIP.

different color = different size

i used a 32 but feel a 34 would work tighter fit then the 32

32mm is gold

34mm is red

also might need to drill and tap hole to fit GM sensor this is a 1/8 NPT thread

if your sensor is not grounded like the one in the 2nd pic down ( 2wire)

then you need to run a good ground wire to the phillips head screw in below pic.

with out it grounded you will get erratic readings NOT GOOD for MS ECU

Yeah I need to measure my coolant hose diameter with some calipers today before I order it but I think I will be getting this one or similar:

I already have 3/8NPT tap so I just need to tap 2 holes in it and I should be set. Thanks again guys...This will look WAY better than what I have going on now. lol.

I may have a pic I can find but the engine is out of the car already so all of that is out of the way. I'll take after pics though!

I bought this:

I measured the upper and lower coolant hoses at between 1.3" and 1.4", I figure stretching it a tenth of an inch won't be a big deal. I wanted to buy this before I bought the inline thermostat as I don't know what size i need for that.

I decided that 2mm is about all you want to go oversize. Stock radiator hose diameter is 1.25" which measures out to 31.75mm, as noted before 34mm is nice and snug. The 36mm that I have is a bit of a bear but it does fit. If I were to purchase one of these again for this car I would have gone with 34mm. I had just pulled the trigger already and figured at $9 I could find someone to take it off my hands if it didn't work. I am going with a 1.25" to 1.25" inline thermostat. Anyway, once the wifey gets home and relieves me of baby duty I will be stepping the 1/8"NPT fitting out to 3/8"NPT and drilling a second one right next to it. I'll take a couple pics once it's installed in a hose.

A couple tips. Make sure you have the correct 9/16" drill bit for the 3/8" NPT tap. The largest I had was 1/2" and I had to use the bit to kinda ream/sand away the rest and it was a royal pain. Also, plan on relocating the grounding screw. Enlarging the screw from 1/8NPT to 3/8 makes it just a touch too large and starts to encroach on the threads for the grounding screw. Anyway, the inside of the screw hole is anodized, so it will make for a better ground if you drill your own anyway. The thread pattern is 8-32. Like I said, use 34mm, not the 36 I used. Getting it on there sucked.
