i got my tool box back from my friends house and i noticed some pioneer 3 way speakers in there. so today i tried to install them but they are larger than stock and im not sure how to go about installing them

should i drill holes into the door?

make the hole in the panel larger and mount them to the door panel?

if anyone has some pics on how they did theres post them up . thanks

Make sure that the larger speakers wont effect the window going down all the way. Its possible that larger speakers could get in the way of where the window glass travels down. Just thought I would point that out so you can keep it in mind.

no worries on the door depth. I run a pair of massive audio 6.5" mids in the door and you won't find a bigger magnet on the planet. Just cut out the door panel and your good to go.

The door panels are made of flimsy fiberboard stuff. I like to take a thin piece of plywood and use it behind the door panel to help strengthen and support the speaker and door panel. You can also cut a piece of plywood to the shape of the carpeted area at the bottom of the door, recarpet that, screw it to the door over the existing carpet and mount your speakers to the nice sturdy, carpeted, wood piece.

You can get the speakers to screw into the crappy fiberboard, and they stay for a while, but eventually the weight of the speakers combined with vibrations and strains from slamming the door all the time will let those screws strip out of the fiberboard.

Well I think I got it figured out.

I recently installed laminate flooring into my room and I still have left over junk pieces so I cut a hole in one and used a sheet metal screw and stock speaker bolt holes. Then secured the speaker to the wood. Then i just cut the door panel to fit the speaker since it was placed higher than stock. And just used the stock speaker screen to cover it up now it looks stock. I'll take some pictures to show what I did.

Yeah,

The door panels are garbage. I actually laid up a fiberglass insert (I used the plastic insert that was in the door as a mold) to bring the inner door panel flat. There was still space between the fiberglass insert and the back of the door panel so I cut 1/4 luan ring and adhered it to the door panel. Then i put deadener over the whole thing. I put the door panel back on it and was perfectly flush with the spacer. I then got #10 screws and screwed the speakers through the door panel, into and through the luan spacer, through the fiberglass insert and through the door. Needless to say, it's amazingly solid.

I also used a tupperware bowl for the speaker to fit into. I then cut the back of the bowl out. I basically acts as a cover for the back of the speaker and protects it against water. Works great.

then ended with this

not the door panel speaker cover was here

and after i cut and fit everything it looks like this

used one stock bolt hole from the stock speakers to make sure everything lines up and then used long self tapping screws and washers where needed to avoid gaps and make sure the speakers mounts level

Just a suggestion rotate the speaker 90 degrees so that the tweeter faces up, helps for high frequencies.

Just my $0.02... ;)

And with that stock cover moved the door panel fits back into place just fine?? Seems like it would bulge out a lil.

Yea it would have bulged out but I did some trimming of the door panel to make it look as stock as possible and that all the fasteners for the panel went back into place. Turned out pretty good. I'm sure anybody that doesn't know these car wouldnt even know it's modded.
